Pete McCarthy: McCarthy's Bar

Synopsis
On an odyssey which takes him from Cork to Donegal, Pete McCarthy challenges his idyllic memories of childhood summers spent in Ireland, and finds that despite many changes since his childhood, the charm of the Irish people still remains.

While travelling round Ireland (not with a fridge, mind you) last year, I found "McCarthy's Bar" in a bookstore and immediately decided to buy it.

I found Pete McCarthy's book makes for an excellent read, highly amusing, never boring, and very accurately describing parts of Ireland where I had just been in a way that let me say: "yep, he's been there allright".

It's not all about Dublin, it doesn't really do as a travel guide but it portrays this country in a way that I have seen, too.

If you liked "Round Ireland with a Fridge" and enjoy the humourous travel writing of Bill Bryson, you will most certainly enjoy "McCarthy's Bar"!

I'm half-way through this. It's great. A must read for anyone with a sense of humour and an interest in the people, history and progress of Ireland.

Be warned though...it's a 'laugh out loud' book. Don't read it in a public place if you mind people staring at you as if you are mad!
