I'm not certain what prompted me to buy this book a few months back, but I did. I'm through the first three chapters and I have to say that up to this point, I really like the book. The writing is rather simple and it does hold your interest through the description of the characters and Gilbert's *exciting* life. The characters don't have their distinctive voice early on the book in my opinion, I look forward to seeing if it improves in regards to that aspect.

Anyone else read it?

I haven't read because I didn't know there was a book just a movie but that would be the next thing I read after Toni Morrison's Tar Baby

Just finished it up tonight. I definitely did not anticipate
Momma dying like she did
I had a good chuckle about
about Mrs. Carver and how she would chase Gilbert all the time.
The book was definitely entertaining, I could see some folks who might feel like that about their life. Resentment can be a huge barrier for folks, especially if they feel "roped in" to helping family or friends due to certain circumstances. Hedges provides definitive character traits between the main players and each one has their own unique personality shining throughout the book. Definitely a good read, I'm glad I bought this one months ago.

Looks like this is another one that I should add to my list. I've seen the movie, and absolutely loved it. Leonardo DiCaprio gave the greatest performance ever...I was in love. :)

Yes, the movie is wonderful. I have the book but have not gotten to it--I'm anxious to see how it compares to the movie.
