Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials

Since I got this series for free I was very sceptical towards it because getting something for free could mean junk. But it's really a great series, with a lot of interesting religious aspects.
Paradise Lost is definetly a theme in the book, since the version I had started each or some of the chapters with a quote from that book. Don't know if that applies to all versions though. I read that it was a childrens book, seems strange though given the Paradise Lost quotes.

Interesting...

I thought the concept of Deamons was interesting. I loved the first book, but the second and third were terrible in my opinion.

I hated them. Bored me to tears, personally. Struggled to get through them, thinking 'when are they going to get better?'

Ah well, at least I gave you a different perspective.

I read the first book and wondered what all the fuss was about. The other two (I bought all three as a set) have sat untouched for ages now. Perhaps one day I'll read them.

I think that the books are very compllicated but highly intresting, it involves more thinking for the reader then most though.

I loved all three of them and wanted to keep reading when I'd finished. I really got caught up in the imagination of it all and it was thought provoking at the same time.

it never ceases to amaze me that the religous right is NOT in an uproar about these books. i liked them, thought the miltonic stuff was a little heavy handed sometimes, but i was amazed by how blasphemous they really are...anyone who thinks they are just directed against the church does not know their religion...these are directed against god and the angels as well as against adults, society, conformity and class

which pretty much ensures a decent book, by me

I read this series a while back, and was amazed to find this was aimed at children. I found the whole story to be very complex and not sure i would have understood it completely at the age of 12.
I thoroughly enjoyed them though, and would recommend them to all adults!

I saw Sir Ian Richardson buy a first edition of The Amber Spyglass at auction for 1000 pounds. (He was in the bidding room on Cash in the Attic, a crap English TV show in which people barter their heritage for cruises to Spain and new dishwashers.)

I read these books and throughly enjoyed them and found them to be very interesting. Their only downfall was that I found them to be a bit tedious and boring in parts, but I think that the other parts made up for this. I was interested to find when I was browsing online that overseas the first book is called The Golden Compass . Here the title is Northern Lights . Just as a matter of interest, Pullman has actually admitted that these books were a means of teaching atheism to the younger generation, which was obvious anyways seeing as how God is the "villain" in these books.

His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman

Anyone read my favorite book? he,he. I have read the triology at least six times.
Of course, Phillip Pullman always kills most of his characters, but it is a good story. Mostly (in my opinion) because it criticises the way we exagerate what at the begging was a good thing (the church, in this case). They killed people just to stop two kids loving each other. Isn't it crazy?

Yep and I too enjoyed this series. Something of a page turner.

Apparently they're going to make films of the books, form memory the first one is planned for release in 2006.....:D :D

when are they going to release the movie?? hope they don't spoil it as they have with other books...

It's almost inevitable that it will be spoilt, because I read that they were going to get rid of most/all of the anti-church/religion stuff. Quite how they can then call this film Northern Lights with all that missing is beyond me. I think someone somewhere is missing the point.

That is completely rediculous  You're completely right - there will be essentially nothing of the book left, and the whole message and point of the book will be lost. I'm very disappointed!

i only read the first one it was amazing i didnt put it down until it was 00.00 (thats is my bed time )

Philip Pulman's Dark Materials are fantastic. I loved the first book, then somebody told me there were more! Christmas was coming early! Just thinking of re-reading them.
