I'm ashamed to say I have not read very much historical fiction, being stuck on fantasy. When I was 14 I picked up The Other Boleyn Girl because I was in the mood for a thick book set in that time period. It was amazing to say the least and totally drew me in from the first page. I recently picked up The Queen's Fool at the bookstore where I work and am going to read it soon. Also, her new novel The Constant Princess looks very good, having read the first few pages. Does anyone else like this author and if so what was your favorite novel by her?
 
I love her, so far my faves are probably The Other Boelyn Girl and The Queen's Fool. Didn't life the Virgin's Queen as much and actually DISLIKED The Constant Princess. I felt like I speant the first 300 pages waiting for it to get started and the last 150 waiting for it to be over. I felt like it was just really really rushed. I'm hoping her new one The Boelyn Dynasty or something like that, will be better.
 
Cool. I'm glad you thought The Queen's Fool was good, seeing as I'll probably read that one next.
Ah, books like that are really annoying where you spend half of the book getting into it...and then it turns out to be bad :rolleyes:
 
I only read The Other Boleyn Girl. I didn't think her writing was anything special, but I did enjoy the book. Took a while to really get into the story though.

I was wondering whether or not to read The Constant Princess. I would have been interested in reading how Gregory handled the life of Queen Katherine but it seems that most readers aren't fond of that book.

Her new book is called The Boleyn Inheritance. It comes out December 5th.
 
Is you're interested in Katherine of Aragon try Jean Plaidy's version. There's three novels, but the edition with all three seems to be the most common.
 
I have really enjoyed all of her books in the "Tudor Series", except for The Virgin's Lover. The Elizabeth they portrayed in here is so far from what she would have had to have been like to keep her throne in times like those. I just really disliked the personality she was given.
 
I'm just starting The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir. I also have Elizabeth & Mary by Jane Dunn but decided to read Henry VIII first.

I agree with you, although I did enjoy The Virgins Lover, I felt she portrayed Elizabeth to be a very weak queen.
 
I recently finished The Queen's Fool. I know many Gregory fans think The Other Boleyn Girl is her best work, but I think I preferred TQF over TOBG. I enjoyed TOBG, yes, but I didn't take to that book right away. Whereas with TQF, I was hooked from the beginning. I only had one problem with The Queen's Fool: Hannah's lack of indecision about Daniel. That went on far longer than it should have.
 
It is interesting that of the six people who have posted on this thread (apart from me - I'm number 7!), only one is from England; one might have expected more replies from the country that inspired the stories! However, it is good to know that it is not just the English who like English history, even if only a fictionalised version.

I have read 'The Other Boleyn Girl' but none of the other works mentioned. I enjoyed it, but to be honest, I find the real history of the period absorbing enough. There is a wealth of excellent non-fiction Tudor history. Maybe it's a gender thing though - it is said that men are more likely to read historical biography. I don't know if that is true in general, but it certainly is for me. I have slipped back a century and a bit at the moment though and am reading a new biography of Henry IV...not just the usurper that Shakespeare would have you believe. But he wasn't a historian...
 
I bought The Other Boleyn Girl at least a year ago, but still haven't touched it... and I'm really selective about the books I buy.
Would it be worth the time?
I mean, if all that's in it are some petty historical narratives and too much of malicious and nefarious story of a sister and how this witch manages to manipulate her sister and "win" the king's heart, then I'd be extremely reluctant to read it.
Still, shoud I?
Would anyone care to dissuade my opinions on the subject...:)
 
I bought The Other Boleyn Girl a while ago, but have yet to read it. I'm very interested in historical fiction, but I'm also wondering how accurate the events are. Given that it's fiction, a lot of it is probably inaccurate, or the authors 'fantasy', but are the core of her books - the setting, etc. - quite accurate?
 
I love The Other Boleyn Girl. It's one of my favorite books and I've read it numerous times. I've picked up other Phillipa Gregory books but can never seem to get into them.
 
I absolutely love Phillipa Gregory's writing. The first book I read was The Other Boleyn Girl a few years back. I continued on with her until I read all of her books that we had in our school library! I know there are more out there and I swear I'll find them!

I actually really enjoyed the Tudor book Gregory - The Other Boleyn Girl, The Constant Princess and The Boleyn Inheritance.

Has anyone else read her books? I felt like the movie totally ruined it all
 
So far I've read only the Boleyn Girl and saw the movie as well. From a historical perspective both have major errors but that's why it's called fiction. I just wish authors would point out their alterations in the end of the book. LOL

The Boleyn Inheritance and The Other Queen are still on my pile and that's where they are probably going to stay for a while. :)
 
I have to admit, I read one of her books and really am not a fan. But I'm thinking about trying The Other Boleyn Girl, since I read something else to begin with. Didn't like the movie much, but visually it was stunning.
