I was a freelance photo-journalist - hundreds of features everywhere from the Nationals to the Trades. I never used to read when I was working in case it influenced my style. Now I'm retired I've got time to read and it is good to notice the little tricks that novelists use.
For me, some of the classics are undeserving - a modern sub-editor would have cut the first 50 pages of Tom Brown's Schooldays and I can just imagine money-conscious Dickens thinking, "Oh gawd, I've got to turn out a piece on Christmas carols by Wednesday"
