Coronado - Dennis Lehane

Coronado - Dennis Lehane :star3:
A collection of short stories. Typical Lehane, dark and ominous.
Standouts were "Until Gwen" about a father and son theft team at odds over a diamond and a woman, and "Runnin' out of dog" about a psychotic young man in a small town, commissioned to kill feral dogs with a sniper rifle. Yeah.

The Picture of Dorian Gray :star3: Many of my friends liked this book a lot, so I went for it with much expectation. Felt a little disappointed. I like Wilde's plays better.

The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann :star3:

Interesting ideas and philosophical discourse contained within a boring story full of one-dimensional characters. A little less philosophy and a bit more of actual plot and character development would have made this a great novel.

The Book of Illusions by Paul Auster :star4:

This is the second book I have read by this author, and both times I had the same reaction. The writing is superb, the story fascinating and thought-provoking, but the end is a let down. It's as if I was driven down a winding road with a hazy destination in the distance and then, abruptly, I am dropped off in the middle of nowhere. Odd, because I am still intrigued and want to read more by Mr. Auster.

Gladiatrix - Russell Whitfield :star4:
The only thing that I didn't really like about this novel was the fact that Lysandra was so arrogant from beginning to end. You'd imagine her ordeals would have softened her up a bit more through time. It was just hard to like her that much.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett :star2:

Okay, I actually didn't finish it. I got half way through and gave up due to boredom. I don't need another page of gratuitous sex, another paragraph explaining so and so's motivations again (I get it already!), and another sentence full of anachronisms. The characters were one-dimensional as well, which is a huge minus for me when reading historical fiction. I give it two stars only because the plot was compelling enough (in the beginning) to keep reading.

I looked up the book on Wikipedia and got the full story there. That was more satisfying then having to slog through one more page of this bloated catastrophe.
