I hated Animal Farm when it was forced upon me in the 10th grade. But its funny how certain events and people trigger a remembrence of this book..so I guess it was a worthy read after all. Maybe since I'm not 15 anymore, I will enjoy it more. Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis is the same way, only I was 18 then...
 
Yesterday I received Palindrome Hannah - Michael Bailey and most of Jane Austen's novels. For some reason Amazon decided I had waited long enough and sent part of my order. No idea when I will get the rest.
 
I just purchased The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova off ebay a couple days ago and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of it!:)
 
In the usual serendipitous way, I went over to the bookstore and bought a different book than I went to look at. I bought How to Read Literature Like a Professor, by Thomas C. Foster. To believe the front cover, it is "a lively and entertaining guide to reading between the lines." To believe the back cover, "Ranging from major themes to literary models, narrative devices, and forms, [the book] is the perfect companion for making your reading experience more enriching, satisfying, and fun."

I'm game for that!

Dark Water by Koji Suzuki and Astérix: Le ciel lui tombe sur la tête (it came out today! well, yesterday since it's already tomorrow... :confused: )
 
Just got a pile of books from my aunt. Unsure if they're to be returned when I'm finished or not but here's the list:

Yann Martel's Life of Pi. Finally I've gotten myself a copy! I figured it sold so well eventually I'll be able to pick up a used copy.
Mordecai Richler's Barney's Version. Gonna give this a shot if I like The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz.
Another copy of Watership Down by Richard Adams.
When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops by George Carlin. I've poked through it a bit and it's been hilarious.
A Widow for One Year by John Irving.
A Son of the Circus by John Irving.
A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.
Me by Katherine Hepburn. NO interest in this at all.
Rachel's Holiday by Marian Keyes. No interest here either.

Not sure I'll bother with the Irvings either. Excited about finally getting Pi though!
 
I went to the library today and got the following:

Felipe Alfau - Das Café der Verrückten (Locos: A comedy of gestures)
and
Bill Bryson - A short History of nearly everything.
 
Went to my local second hand dealer and found two books I thought looked interesting.
Swan's Song by Robert R. McCammon
Society of the Mind by Eric L. Harry

The first is a post-apocalyptic fantasy/horror thing from what I gather from the blurb, looks interesting enough so I'll probably put it a bit higher on my TBR list simply because I don't have a lot of futuristic stuff on said list.

The second is a sci-fi thing about a computer main frame so advanced that it is now in need of a shrink to help it sort its thoughts and feelings(!). This too sounded interesting if a bit cheesy.

I've never heard of either writer before and the books didn't cost a whole lot so I figured "Why not?".

Now we'll see when I get around to reading them :p
 
Yesterday I purchased both The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. $7 all up :) (my local bookstore was having a two for one /and/ 25% off sale. My lucky day)
 
Went to a library book sale today, but the pickings were pretty dismal. I picked up:

'A Noble Radiance' by Donna Leon
'A Separate Peace' by John Knowles
'The Boy's Tale' by Margaret Frazer

This is the second Leon novel I've picked up, but they are on my TBR pile. Amazingly enough, I've never read the Knowles. I have friends who read it in school, but for some reason I never came across it. The Frazer is a nice cozy from the Sister Frevisse Medieval mystery series. Not earth-shatteringly exciting, but all worth the $1.50! :)
 
I just read "3 Wise Men by Stephen Buckler, it's a great new thriller and couldn't put it down. If you like a fast moving political thriller, pick it up
 
i was in walmart today and bought two stephen king books. i really liked Carrie so i thought i'd buy some more.

Just bought Melancholy Baby by Robert B. Parker. It's a thin(292 pages) book, but one that I will probably read through tonight.:)
