Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Irving - Owen Meany. My very own copy at last.

Melville - Moby Dick

Twain - Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn

Eco - Name of the Rose

Amis - Information. One of the few of his I haven't yet read.

HG Wells - The Invisible Man

Maupin - Tales of the City. Always been curious about this.

Miller - Canticle for Leibowitz. The library copy can go back now.

Vonnegut - Slaughter House 5. One more chance for this geezer. If it doesn't work out, he's history.

And all of these for under £10.

Hurrah for Book Barn.

That's just over £1 per book.

I'll have to go to Book Barn one of these days, even though the closest is about 2 hours from where I live.

Last Chance Texaco by Brent Hartinger

The Jacqueline Susann Story by Jeffrey Ventura

Sky Island by L. Frank Baum

What Ifs In American History and a David McCullough boxed set for the boyfriend.

I might also have to buy Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin because I checked it out from work and can't put it down, so I think I need to own it.

I have a rule of thumb for cookbooks. If I find myself copying more than 10 recipes, I need to buy the book.

Books recently purchased (within the last two months):
- Cultural Literacy
- A First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy
- The Chronicles of Narnia
- The Borrowers
- What your ________ needs to know (bought K-3rd grade)
- Understanding Isaiah
- A Thomas Jefferson Education and most of the articles from GWC by Oliver and Rachel DeMille - I went way above my budget, but doesn't Christmas justify buying more than you intend?
- How to Read a Book (sounds funny to be reading a book about reading a book, but really an excellent book!)
- 4 Magic Tree House books for my 6 yr old :)

For those of us with a book budget - mine is $50/month - what books have been most recently checked out of the library?

I just got my first two Pern books in the mail.

Also I just bought The Broker by John Grisham.
Somebody stop me:D

I purchased Umberto Eco- The Name of the Rose, Amelie Nothomb- Mercure, George Orwell-1984 and Haruki Murakami- Norwegian Wood.

Today popped into Chapters in Dublin and bought two books, The Snapper by Roddy Doyle and The Big Picture by Douglas Kennedy. Never heard of Douglas Kennedy before, liked the look of the book so said I'd give it a try.

My boyfriend got back from Aussie today, and as part of my present I got Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini. I have really wanted to read these for a long time, so I'm very happy.

A Woman's Civil War ~ Found it in the section for American history at Borders marked at $9.99 so naturally I had to get it. I was rather surprised to find a hardcover book that cheap there! Wow, it's been awhile since I bought a book that wasn't at some kind of sale.

Speaking as a mom..your purchases are hurting no one..you aren't buying drugs, weapons, or bomb ingredients, so that's worth a lot! If she complains about the excess clutter caused by your books, just tell her you wanted to increase the R-value in your part of the house and books are much more interesting than ordinary insulation material. Besides, you're educating yourself in the most cost effecient way imaginable;)

BTW-if you ARE buying drugs, weapons, or bomb ingredients..now might not be a good time to tell your mom:D

haha.... thanks for the support... i shall cut and paste this, and email it to my mom. she'll appreciate me more... :p but maybe i'll leave out the last part, in case she really asks and i don't wanna tell her the truth yet... :D

I received more books from my boyfriend today - My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody and Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs - as well as getting The Time Traveller's Wife in the mail today as part of another bookring. I'm going to be very busy for the next few weeks :D

Your boyfriend sure knows how to keep you happy, MC! ;) My g'daughter loved both of the Paolini books.

Her fifteenth birthday is coming up so (with the help of advice I got here), I bought her:

Guy Garvriel Kay's - The Lions of Al-Rassan & The last Light of the Sun
China Mieville's - Perdidio Steet Junction
Le Guin's - A Wizard of Earthsea & Tales from Earthsea
Kingsolver's - Prodical Summer
Nevada Barr's - High Country

Have you read all of these?

(I'd dearly love to see a photo of your TBR pile!)

Hmm... Kay, Mieville and Le Guin? I must say, Still, your granddaughter is highly intelligent and has the most exacting taste in fantasy literature (ahem!).

I'm hoping that she likes these books. I'm going on what you all advised me to buy for her. She is "the brain" in her class though.

The Kingsolver was my idea.
