Recommend detective series??

I am very fond of the 20s and 30s-style detective books -- Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey, and though more comedy, P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves & Wooster. But I've run out--read them all. Of course I've read Conan Doyle too.

I'm looking for a good contemporary writer of the same style (maybe even about the same period??). I don't like "thrillers" or "horror"-style mysteries, which is all I can seem to find right now.

You can try out the series of novels by Sue Grafton. the main character is Kinsey Millhone and she is a PI. I am currently reading her series. the series starts at A is for Alibi and continues on through the alphabet. Sue Grafton just recently published T is for Trespass. You might want to check those books out and see what you think, but if you like them, start at the beginning, or you will get lost.

You might want to try the Father Brown series by GK Chesterton.

Another good one is the Cadfael series by Ellis Peters. It's not set in the 1930s, but it's worth a read.

I agree...Grafton does an amazing job with the Alphabet series. My personal favorite detective series is the Alex Cross ones by James Patterson. I'm ashamed to say that I got into them AFTER I watched "Kiss the Girls" but, now I've read them all.
