recommend me fails

What are some books where the "chosen one" failed or was killed and it is up to another to save the world. Or maybe where super heroes exist but were all killed by their nemisis and then another rises or something.

Have you read The Hound of the Baskervilles? One could argue that the greatest of chosen ones, hope, is absent for a great deal of this book; it's defeated in spirit by disdain and negativity.
