Recommendation for my nephew?

I wanted to get my nephew a book for Christmas, but I'm not very knowledgable about books for children his age (around 4 1/2). I want to get something that he'll enjoy listening to and eventually be able to read on his own in a couple years. Basically I'm looking for the best children's book there is. =P

Any ideas?

Hmm that looks like a possibility, he does like dragons...but i was hoping for something that could be educational in some way, that he could really use. I dont know what i'm after really, i'm hardly an expert in this department. I suppose i'm being difficult...
 
Kind of weird, isn't it, that I signed on both times today right after you posted?

You aren't being difficult. You're beeing a bit picky. And being picky isn't a bad thing if you're buying a present for someone, and you want to find just the right thing.

There are some parents on this forum who may have better suggestions than I do as to something educational. I honestly can't think of anything in that area. The mother of the kids I baby-sat for was not known for stressing education...most of the books and movies the girls had were pretty useless. But I remembered seeing the dragon book and thinking it was cute.

There's the link. I do hope you like it. I believe it should be age appropriate, and probably easy enough that he could read it in a couple of years. Plus, it's just too darn cute. And about a dragon. I think one could hardly ask for more.

That looks very interesting, but a little above your nephew's reading level. It is reccommended for grades three through six.

(Abecedarian, I knew you'd have something to reccommend much better than I did.)

Not better, just different;) The choices are legion...
 
Here are the two best books according to my kids. I read them to them when they were 2-3 yrs. old and they continue to be favorites today now that they are 11, 9 & 7 years old.

They are both books of poems that are playful, funny, imaginative, don't talk down to kids and have a lot of fun with word play and language. They are also not above the heads of young kids. Both are excellent.

Jack Prelutsky - Something Big has been here (there is a poem in this book about the alphabet that is one of the singular best pieces of writing I have ever encountered for teaching kids a love of language, the alphabet and language structure without them ever suspecting they are being taught anything but a laugh.)

Shel Silverstein - Who Wants a Cheap Rhinocerous or The Giving Tree.
 
i heard the book the little prince was a good read. i've never read it, but it's been frequently recommended. they say it's a good children's book along with a book that can read as you get older. is that meeting your criteria?
