Remaining Unread: The Top Ten Reasons We Don’t Get to Certain Books

Years ago I picked up Monte Cristo on the B&N Classics shelf because I felt like I should read the classics. I've made three attempts to read it, but it's still unfinished. I don't even pretend like I will attempt it again. It will sit there unread for the rest of my life.

That's a devastatingly hilarious article, pontalba. I was both cringing and laughing as I read it. I have more than my share of books that I have put aside -- I have a category for that, already -- and, worse yet, others I may never get to, but now I have ten new categories for putting my books into. Oh Yay!
But in my case I think it all boils down to just three reasons.
1. I like books.
2. I like to have them on my shelf in case the bookstore never again has them on their shelf.
3. I'm in love with Borders.

And some I actually read -- 7 out of those horrible 25, in fact, with only one clunker.

I could go on and on and name names for each of those categories, many names, but I won't. It's already depressing enough.

Have to get back to my reading,
or else I'll never catch up,
Good post!

2. I like to have them on my shelf in case the bookstore never again has them on their shelf.

Absolutely, "they" could become like Wal-Mart and have an item in stock and if you don't buy it on the spot, it disappears forever! Don't think for a moment it can't happen! :D

Hugh, don't feel alone, I have a few like that...Ulysses for one.

Yes, Fantasy Moon, the bargain bin is my downfall as well...and we have a well stocked Library Sale every month. I'm doomed.

1. It's a book I feel like I should read.

So very true !

3. Everyone I know is recommending it.

Yep! The hype gets to me.

4. It's intimidatingly enormous.

I made an oath never to read any book over 500 pages. Life is just too short !

.

I'm guilty of everything else but #10 :D. I also want to say I laughed when I saw The Almost Moon on the list of 25 unread books. I have eyed that book, but due to reasons #7 and #8 I haven't actually started it yet.

I found the Michael J. Fox book in the bargain bin and felt the call to own a book for such a cheap price.

Now that I've finally read Moby Dick I find myself wondering why I didn't read the book sooner.

Here's another reason for me:

11. I don't want to be disappointed.

As long as I haven't read it it still could be a really great book and so exists in that state in my mind.
