I have been looking for a particular book to adapt into a short film but the library where I had originally read the book has since closed. I cannot for the life of me remember the name and only vaguely remember the plot. If someone locates for me I am willing to give a small reward. The title has thief or thieves in it and the cover was mainly colored brown and while. The author and the book itself were not very popular becuase the first time I found it online there was barely anything on him or the book.
Plot...
The book takes place probably around early 1800's and starts with a boy playing in a field with friends. All of a sudden the boy sees a girl being apprehended by authorities and is taken to court. Somehow the boy manages to convince the authorities to let her go and he takes her into his custody. The boy then takes her home to his father i believe or maybe mother, but the girl never speaks. I believe eventually the boy's father or mother dies in a house fire but I'm not positive. The girl eventually talks and lets him know she belonged to a house of child thieves, kidnapped and raised by abusive people who are still hunt the girl down. Either that or she was the only child in the abusive household i'm not certain. The boy then tries to help her help the other children to escape but i forget if they are successful. The boy then starts a rivalry with some man who I think owned the house or wanted to kill or get rid of the thieves or something I'm not sure. Near the end of the book the boy acquires the help of some man to help him with some huge scheme but that is all I remember.
