Robert Jordan: Wheel of Time

Ainulindale said:
Jordan remains IMHO one of the most overated authors in the history of the genre - he simply lsot it after book 3 , had to many ideas that his talent couldn't keep up with. I gvie hi mcredit because he gave the current epic fantasy series greats (Martin, bakker, and Erikson) a blueprint in what not to do.

I haven't read this series and have no intention of starting but I do know several who have and they all say the same thing: Past book three it's just not good.

Yeah, I laughed when I read Ainulindale's post yesterday. I'd never looked at this thread before, but it pretty much fit with my previous experience. I really enjoyed it until Book 4... then threw it away in disgust. I'm not at the disgusted stage yet, and am still enjoying the adventure story. A poorly written adventure, but it's keeping me turning the pages...

Read through book 4. Put it down. Make up your own ending to the series. It will save you countless hours of grief. The only thing you'll miss are the desciption of what everyone in the land is wearing.

Really?! Oh, but I love hearing about Moiraine's latest blue frock, and the bosom revealing dresses that Elayne and Egwene seem to enjoy so much (what is it with the busts on fantasy characters? Or is it the predominantly male writers I read that is to blame? What I wouldn't give for a heroine to be flat chested and mousy-looking). [/sarcasm]

Have you seen the covers to Fantasy written by women lately? The only difference between many of them and Romance novel covers is the dwarf standing beside the broad man with wavy blonde hair and pecs that span unaturally wide. Big boobs are not gender specific in Fantasy. ;)

Heh, heh. Nice. :D Perhaps there's a market for romance novels with a dwarf, though... a cowboy dwarf called Jet, who's years in prison have hardened his heart and his muscles. Until he meets Yelonda, a tall, mousey looking and flat chested southern gal, who sees beyond Jet's stoic exterior and softens his heart, but not his hard... muscles.

I'm almost done with The Path of Daggers, I can't wait to read Winter's Heart. I've had that one sitting in my room for ages, 'cause my mom saw it at a flea market, new, never been read, hard cover, for like $2. I'm LOVING the books!

~~

It took me a while to get into this series, but I'm on book 4 now, it's good but I'm not as keen on them as Terry Goodkinds books from the Sword of Truth series. I'm finding Jordan's books are draggin quite a lot and it takes a while for things to happen, then when they do happen it's all over in an instant,

but it's still a good series I guess, :)

I started reading this series awhile ago, I have the books up to path of daggers but I only got up to book four. They got so long and drawn out that I'd started skipping scene. (I know, bad bad bad)

I should start the series again as I really love the idea of Aes Sedai...

So I just finished the Eye Of The World. It wasn't great but it makes me want to keep reading. I'm seperating all these novels with other books too though so I don't get burned out ;) Is the second worth it?

reading this thread has reminded me i haven't read book 11 yet, even tho i bought it ages ago... i think i'll wait till the series is finally finished, and see if i can go back and start at book 1 once again.. because quite frankly, it's been so long since i was in the WOT world, i think i've forgotten most of it..

i really enjoyed this series when it started, i bought the first book in 1991!! but my interest waned after about book 8 or 9... i still bought 10 and 11 tho, and will buy the books till it's finished, as i'm convinced the story will benefit from a straight read..

i'm at the same point with Terry Goodkind's SOT series, still haven't read book 9, Chainfire, and i see book 10 is out now..

i think both series are just too long... i'm tired of waiting for the end.

I tried to read the series, but quit in the middle of book six. I felt like the wrting quality starting going downhill in book five and was even worse with six. I heard that they do get better later on, but I don't think I'm up to wading through the bad to get to the good.

With that said, I really did enjoy the first few books, the characters and plot were quite good. :)

Actually, they get worse later on. Crossroads of Twilight, book 10, is one of the worst fantasy novels ever written. You gave up reading it at a sensible point - where it was still worth reading. For some reason I still can't work out, I read all the way up to book 10 before giving up.

i have to say i did enjoy a large chunk of this series... several boks were cack so don't get me wrong but he has the ability, jordan that is, but he just seems to be lacking the will for some of the books, the prequal was v good in my opinion.

Me, I enjoyed the entire series... it had its ups and downs, but all do... I read and LOVED KoD, and am anxiously awaiting number 12

If you havent read ANY of the books,...I would definitly NOT reccomend the series to you...until after Robert Jordan recovers from his sickness..more info: www.dragonmount.com

He's still got 2+ books to go until the series is finished,...you will not be happy (and neither will he) if he (sorry to say this so vividly) croaks before he finishes it.

Otherwise, the series is a joy to read.

I got halfway thru the sixth book and gave up. Jordan stopped advancing the plot. Does anyone remember one scene where Rand has a vision of the future, in which he sees airplanes flying thru the sky? I was trying to recall if that happened or if my imagination was tricking me.
