Sci-fi book - bit like 1984

Hello,

this book was about a version of society whereby to earn "credits" people have to watch TV, the government wanted to brainwash everyone and so TV was how they did it. The main character had learned to sleep with his eyes open and so was able to earn lots of credits, thats about all I can remember.

Any ideas?

I have no idea about what book you are talking about. But the book sounds damn interesting.

Armageddon by Robert Rankin? The main character, Rex Mundi sleeps with his eyes open and earns extra credits by watching tv almost constantly. The people on Earth are in turn being watched on tv by aliens who regard it as a soap opera.
