To get started, how about your favourites? (I think we did this some time ago, but I can't find the thread and there are lots of new members now.)

A few of my faves:

A Canticle for Liebowitz - by Walter Miller Jr.
Fahrenheit 451 - by Ray Bradbury
The Martian Chronicles - by Ray Bradbury
Ender's Game - by Orson Scott Card
Dune - by Frank Herbert
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe - by Douglas Adams (actually the entire trilogy of 5!)
Stranger in a Strange Land - by Heinlein
Lathe of Heaven - by Ursula K Le Guin
 
I haven't read much in these genres, but these are my favourite fantasy books:-

The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien.
The Elenium Trilogy by David Eddings.

Haven't really read much Science Fiction, except for books such as Jurassic Park.

I still say my all time favorite is The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by R.A. Heinlein. Its just an all around good Sci Fi book. As for Fantasy I'd have to say that Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein is at the top of the list followed closely by The Amber Series by Roger Zelazny.

Friday, Double Star, The Door Into Summer, Puppet Masters, Red Planet by R.A. Heinlein

I've been addicted to reading for only 2 years now, so my sci-fi/fantasy list will be fairly short, but good none the less (at least, I think so):

1) The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy; Douglas Adams (All time favourite book)
2) Lord Of The Rings; J. R. R. Tolkien (And not just 'cause of the movie)
3) The Siren's Of Titan; Kurt Vonnegut (Surprised nobody mentioned that one)
4) Only Forward; Michael Marshall Smith (Relatively unknown british author)
5) Kil'n People; David Brin (Nothing deep, just good fun)

Ask me again a year from now and you'll get an entirely different list (except for the first and second one)

I agree even though I didn't put it in my favorites. Adams is one of my all time favorites. I think we all have a little bit of Arthur Dent in us at times.
 
My point exactly, Prolixic.

In my opinion, Arthur Dent is one of the most likable characters ever to be written down.

I'd sure love to be him!

The Dragon Prince and Dragon Star trilogies by Melanie Rawn are excellent. I've also enjoyed the Jaran series by Kate Elliott and the Red Mars series by Kim Stanley Robinson. That one is a lot more scientific - it can seem slow at times, but at the same time, the logic and underlying story is fascinating!

Hey fluff, I've read several of those authors but I think my favorite is C.S. Lewis (Narnia) great stuff. I've read some H.G. Wells and most of Douglas Adams stuff and, of course, Tolkein. Great discussion threads from a few months ago on Tolkein over in the Book of the Month forum.
 
I am currently reading The Narnia Chronicles to my 6 year old daughter. We are on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe right now. It's so much fun rereading my childhood favorites and seeing my daughters eyes light up with enjoyment. In fact she is insisting we change her name to Lucy. I much prefer that to her insistance on being called Clifford the Big Red Dog last year.

Am getting syruply addicted to Herbert's son's The Butlerian Jihad...
Thought I would not,
The Daddy is still the greatest ever SF writer to me.

There is also a short story by Asimov of which I cannot remember the title where a strnager was spotted as an Earth spy in a lunar satellite for looking for the Earth in the wrong direction: looking at his feet instead of at the sky.
