Searching for a fantasy book/series similar to Ender's Game (or early Orson Scott Card)?

I keep getting recommendations for Game of Thrones when I ask about fantasy novels. Where the series is good, in it's own right, I'm sure, I don't want to read that. There is a bigger world out there that has nothing to do with Game of Thrones. /end rant

in what respect do you mean similar to Ender's Game? By which I mean - what is it about them that grabs you - the space adventure? defeating the aliens? boy against the universe? Apart from um oh blast it what was that book ... hang on ... going to refresh the memory banks cos this is going back years .....

[pause for google search]

The Last Starfighter by Alan Dean Foster - is just about the only book that I can think of that fits strictly into a 'similar to Enders Game' description.

I like the space aspect but I also like the underlying theme. It's sort of dystopian/utopian. Depending how you look at it. I"ll look up the Last Starfighter.

I hsve heard that, Alvin Maker by Orson Scott Card are good.

I've yet to try Alvin Maker, though I really want to. I"ll add that to my list. Thanks.

Definitely YA, but you might like the Daniel X series by James Patterson.

What's this about?

You might like Kim Stanley Robinson's books. Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars, 2312...there are many more.

Might be a bit 'younger' than you're looking for, but check out ABOVE by Mackie Burt. She's a fresh 20-year-old writer with a knack for fantasy. The book is also slated to be the first of four.

What's it about?

Cassandra Clare's books are always good

I tried reading the Clockwork Prince and I found it a little hard to get into. Does it get better after the first few chapters?

Oh, now I am reminded of Larry Niven...try his Lucifer's Hammer. End of the world, meteor crashing into earth..... :)

What's it about?

Here's the author's summary:

Callie Lane is your typical all-American teenager, struggling with issues of love and jealousy, schoolwork, right vs. wrong, good vs. evil and navigating her way through the straits of “growing up.” The only difference is that Callie is dead. And her world is now ABOVE.

When 17 year-old Callie’s life is suddenly cut short, she “wakes up” ABOVE, and soon discovers it’s not exactly what she expected. Still reeling from the fact that she is, in fact, no longer living, Callie learns that she’s also part of a select group of recently-passed teens fated to become Guardians.

Not only does Callie have to go to Guardian school, her dead grandmother happens to be the headmistress and the curriculum includes revisiting every mistake she’s ever made. And since no one seems to want to give her a straight answer about anything -- including the mysterious empty room next to hers -- Callie comes to realize that life ABOVE is even more confusing than the life she just left behind.

Callie must come to terms with her Watched resisting her guidance, her feelings for a boy she’s drawn to but who withholds from her, and the knowledge that she is a target for the evil that exists ABOVE. But her hardest lesson will be to understand that she has as much to give as she has to learn. Callie must choose to acknowledge and accept her gifts, embrace her fate, and become a Guardian who can make a difference that will impact the worlds below, ABOVE and beyond.

You can also read the first four chapters on WattPad.
