Sensory deprivation and writing-do you do it?

I've had some friends in college who before writing or creating some art piece, would engage in some form of sensory deprivation. From sleep deprivation, hunger-striking, Caffeine binging, or going"cold turkey" on any stimulant(both legal and not so legal) I've practically heard it all. Meditating for days and weeks sounds interesting to me, though I'll have to wait until summer time to actually do that.:p By far the weirdest thing to do that I've heard was inflicting pain on yourself through a sharp object or item that "pinches" you. A friend who did this explained that as you are in pain, your concentration is heightened and that you are definitely "there" when you normally wouldn't be.

So, odd things being what they are-do you do any sensory deprivation or other tactic to bring out your inner writing talent?

Nothing more than psychological preparation. This is a way they convince themselves they're prepared.

Me? I drink.

Weird. If it takes that much to bring out someone's talent... makes you question what that 'talent' is.

Never heard of this before. Kind of makes sense why so many artists are crazy now. Remember this thread?

Hippy bollocks. I've never heard such tosh. Kook has pretty much hit the nail on the head here as far as I'm concerned.

I agree about the whole pain thing..I know it's strange but while you are in pain, even if it's just pinching yourself on the arm, your senses and your brain are more alert and heightened. Also, sleep deprivation and caffeine-overloads are good..as well as..not so legal methods

My triad is alcohol, cigarettes and Ritalin. The alcohol calms me down and lowers my inhibitions; the Ritalin gives me energy and keeps me focused; and the cigarettes give me a break and added focus and energy. I'm not a smoker; that is, I don't take smoke breaks at work, and I don't think, "Man, I need a cigarette." The Ritalin/nicotine mix seems to help bring what's in my head out to my mouth or my fingertips.

I've been advised by several people that I'm probably using the triad as a crutch and should be trying to remove it from my habit. Hopefully I will soon.

Ha. The post causes my interests, making me want to try all that too. I don't think it is crazy or anything like that. Well, to each his/her own?
It is kind of non-common experience. I do agree on what Minniemal said.
