Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend any good series for me. I've read all the Rizzoli - Tess Gerritsen books, Sarah Linton - Karin Slaughter books, Logan McRae - Stuart Macbride books, and I'm after another good series.

Thanks in advance!

At a party the other night one of guest (a Biologist of all things) recommended that I read a trilogy (historical fiction) by Conn Iggulden on Genghis Khan:

The three books:

That same evening another person (nurse) told me that I should read a book by James A. Michener (historical fiction also - I guess every one knows that's my favorite genre). This one is not a series but comes highly recommended:

Another good hit Aqua.
Conn Iggulden serie is as much of a thriller as, say lord of the ring and Genghis is no Hercule Poirot, the only thing they might have in commun is a mustache.
I read the first one and enjoyed it.
As for Michener whom i have not read yet, i doute it is ether serie or thriller.

One of the best crime series ever, by one of the really fine living writers, is the adventures of Russian cop Arkady Renko.
Starting with Gorky Park, then coninuing in Polar Star and Red Square as the USSR collapses, then to Cuba for Havana Bay.

Cruz is a masterful writer. Renko is a great character, with a dry sense of humor and a complex dedication that makes you want to cry or shake his hand.

There are so many it is hard to know where,to start. Michael Connelly has the Harry Bosch series about a homicide investigator in LA. Kathy Reichs with her Temperance Brennan character. Much better than the character on the TV series. In the books she is likeable. Nic Costa series by David Hewson which is about a detective in Italy. Vince Flynn writes about Mitch Rapp a counterterrorism specialist for the CIA. That is just a few out there. Many good writers.

I read The Lords of the Bow and loved it. As far as detective book series, I think Sherlock Holmes is number one all time, but among modern detectives Matt Scudder novels by Lawrence Block are my favorite. William Monk novels by Anne Perry are also very good, but set in old days like Sherlock.

I don't think you can beat the 87th precinct novels by Ed McBain for realism. Great stories. You get to know all the characters in the 87th Precinct lilke old friends as you read through the many books he has written on this series.
Used to be a TV series many years ago.
He must have written over 30 such thrillers.

Steven Saylor writes a detective series featuring an ancient Roman detective by the name of Gordianus the Finder you might like.

Carole Nelson Douglas writes a series about Irene Adler, "the woman" of Sherlock Holmes fame, as well as Midnight Louis of course. :D

Elizabeth George has a couple of detective series going, one being the Inspector Lynley one.

I had forgotten 87th Precinct stories. I used to love those also and really miss them now that McBain has passed away. Last one I read, the title of which escapes me, was about one of the 87th precinct detectives who writes a mystery novel. It is really funny
and would love to read it again if I could find it.

That was Fat Ollie's Book. Very funny and a great read. Didn't know Ed had passed. Fiction will miss him.

I second the Irene Adler series by Carole Nelson Douglass, and would add:
Erast Fandorin series by Boris Akunin, starts with The Winter Queen ( I laughed when the author mentioned a game of American Roulette)

The Ballad Series by Sharyn McCrumb. Starts with If Ever I Return Pretty Peggy-o, but that's the weakest book in the series. I can't recommend this series highly enough...

Anna Pigeon series by Nevada Barr. Not necessary to read in order..some titles are better than others.. favorites of mine include Blind Descent, Endangered Species, and Blood Lure.

Bloodhound Series by Virginia Lanier

Joe Grey Mystery series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy-Talking cats are the real detectives...just a fun series.

I don't think James Michner wrote a series of any sort. I could be wrong though.

What was that series you liked set in New Orleans? I think I read the first one, but I'm blank on the title and author. Come on sister, think for me!

....Brit-based books, I like the works of Simon Kernick and Mark Billingham.

Billingham's central charcter, DI Tom Thorne is a bit of a loner - but I'm enjoying getting into the series! I've only just started - greatly enjoyed 'Sleepyhead' and am onto the last few pages of 'Scaredycat' - have the next one, 'Lazybones' ready to go..

Simon Kernick's books have repeating characters - and I have a soft spot for Mike Bolt! I started halfway through, so I'm going back to the earlier ones with DS Dennis Milne...cop and part-time assassin!

I think that Ollie was the character in 87th precinct most like an actual NY detective. (Although city in 87th precinct was called Isola, it was definitely NYC. However, I like Meyer Meyer the best. I also liked the Matthew Hope novels McBain wrote.

Do you mean the ones James Lee Burke wrote, the Dave Robicheaux [ex-New Orleans detective] series? They're only partially based in N.O., they are all in South Louisiana though, between New Iberia and N.O. Good stuff, beautiful prose, almost none better in places.
I don't know why I didn't think of that one! /bonk on the head!/ :D

Also, I'll second your Joe Grey cat detective series, that author knows cats! :D I love Joe Grey.

And...you're right Michner didn't write series, but to my way of thinking all of his "epics" are cut from the same cloth, and are really series within themselves...of whatever place he is writing about, whether it's Hawaii or the American West as in Centennial.

Yes, for me anything Ed McBain wrote was enjoyable, but I must have most of the 87th series and re-read them at intervals.

Just finishing a Colin Dextor, Inspector Morse thriller. The Dead of Jericho, That is another series I would heartily endorse. A real thinking detective novel.

Seconded. Probably my favorite detective author. He writes scenes of violence that are actually beautiful to read!

There is Colin Dexter novel at library I was going to pick up next time called The Remorseful something or other. Never read one of these books but had a dvd of Inspector Morse tv show was pretty good. I also enjoy Robicheaux series.
