A bit on the old fashion side, and more psychological than real horror.:star3:
The desciption of the house give you to expect deliscious frightening scenes but appart from banging on doors, and sudden chilling of the air,it was a bit disapointing. The principal charactere,Eleonore, is the main interest of the book, lock in for eleven years caring for an old mother(ring a bell ?) hill house is her first experience outside,on her own....
I saw the movie before but haven't the slightest memory of it.

I read this years ago and remember no particulars except that I enjoyed it.

The one I liked even better - and remember more about - is Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived at the Castle. That one did give me a chill.

I actually like unexplained bainging on the doors and sudden chilling of the air. I like the mystery of an unknown.

I think the Haunting of Hill House was good for it's time, but Hollywood has raised the bar over the years on what we consider frightening.
