Short Story of the Week?

We have the Book of the Month Club here. Why not a Short Story of the Week? (unless I'm missing something and there's already a place here to discuss short stories?)

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer short stories over novels, although I do like novels a lot. If this site could start such a club, I would be thrilled. But I'm not sure about the interest level.

I don't know why people don't want to discuss short stories. They're sometimes more interesting than novels and you don't have to invest a lot of time in them. Normally, you can finish a short story in one sitting.

Would it be better to create a thread about each short story I've read and let others chime in? Or create one thread for all short stories? Would I be talking to myself if I created these threads? Are there short story threads already?
 
Unless you're going to read each short story out of the same book, I don't know how keen folks would be into buying or borrowing a new book every week for the short story. Then again, I might be surprised.

Aside from some Lovecraft discussion, I haven't noticed any short story threads. I say go ahead and start a thread on each short story you want to discuss and see where it leads. Just make sure you tell folks where it came from.
 
On one forum I belong to they, in conjunction with other books, choose a book of short stories and will then choose stories from that book to discuss. Maybe not on a weekly basis, but on a more flexible schedule.

Is it possible for you mods to create a separate sub-forum for short stories within the Fiction forum, or another forum altogether for Short Stories? That way, I won't clutter up the main boards with a whole bunch of short story threads.
 
SeoulMan, what kind of short stories do you like?
I have several, lets be honest, I have a load of short story collections, from Lawrence Block to Amy Hempel. One I have is Adaptations...From Short Story to Big Screen by Stephanie Harrison. Some interesting stuff in there.
 
I have no favorites. What I tend to do is go to a used book store and pick up a used short story collection (it doesn't matter which) and read through it. I don't discriminate. The collection I'm going through now is The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction (Fifty North American Stories since 1970). Nice collection.

I've tried collections by one author. For example, Allegra Goodman's "The Family Markowitz." I liked it and then got bored with the same style throughout all the stories. I guess I need variety.
 
I'll do it, but my guess is I'll end up talking to myself in a whole bunch of individual short story threads cluttering the fiction forum. Although I guess if there's enough activity, the admin will create a new sub-forum. Crossing fingers.
 
I would enjoy reading and discussing some short stories. Perhaps some Edgar Allan Poe or Henry David Thoreau?

Yes, please start a thread and lets see what kind of interest it draws.
 
I should add that once per week is probably too much, and that it should be avoided all together on the first week of the month since (hopefully) many of our members will be heavely into the BOTM.

Good advice, especially the first week of the month for BOTM.
 
Anyone can start a short story thread in the short story sub-forum. Those of you who want to read Poe or Thoreau can start your own thread and see what happens. For me personally, I will start two threads per month, alternating between a classic short story and a modern one. The modern ones may be more difficult to get, but hey, there's always the library!

(I guess I can't speak for everyone but the library is easily accessible to me, but I know in some parts of the country (in the USA and GB), not everyone can get there without going out of their way.)
 
You know, I might try and read a short story or two a week. Perhaps I'll come to appeciae them. I won't be joining you on O'Conner as I have plenty on my shelves to be getting on with. Dubliners perhaps, finally.
