Should art reflect the world

I don't see how any art can ever be fully divorced from the creator's reality. Unfortunately however with some modern artists the reality that is reflected is more than a little disturbing.

Although that would then fall into 'good' art because it elicits a response, but I don't think wondering if the artist concerned shouldn't be locked up in a mental hospital is the kind of response 'good' art should elicit.
Van gogh would love you

Oh yes they can ... the fields and the skies as well. The way his paint strokes swirl on the canvas .... *shudders* the guy was fruit loops

I like van Gogh's sunflowers. :)

Re thread's topic: art shouldn't necessarily reflect the world or whatever (political) issues are current in whichever part of the world the artist is from. However, when artists do decide to make a piece of art reflecting their view of the world, it does provide the art lover and student with a perspective on the world as it was however many years ago.

yes swift was sublime when he was roused or jealous

As has been stated before, I don't think an artist should be obligated to portray anything they do not feel. Artist that have shared events from their times have given us valuable insights into their time, culture and/or point of view, sometimes much deeper than mere facts could have. Sometimes this takes you to a negative, ugly place but it is still a valuable insight. The poem I remember most from my first poetry class was, the Death of a Ball Turret Gunner, by Randall Jarrell, it was dark yet moving and took you to his perspective.

I agree. I think art has to flow out of passion / emotion / feeling / experience and if that is a contemporary experience then it is, if it isn't then it isn't.

I feel art should neither be forced nor contrived. If the artist feels about an issue and it touches his creative core, he will most probably express it in his art form but he is not obliged to do so. It is not his social responsibility.

If he finds his inner world or an alternate universe more inspiring, so be it.
