Stephen King: Desperation

Lincoln Rhyme

New Member
Summary: The desolate road of Highway 50 in Nevada is a peaceful place...until a killer cop decides to go haywire on 8 individuals and their families! It seems the only hope of getting out of this cops hands is David Carver,a very smart kid for his age. Only thing is, this cop doesn't seem normal.....

My opinion: Very good story with well-rounded characters. Although Tak could have used more of a personality.

My rating:4.3/5

I'm a big fan of Stephen King's work, but I really struggled with Desperation. I found that I enjoyed the idea of it all, but don't think the book really succeeded in doing that idea justice. That is, I think that it didn't realise the potential of the great ideas he had going on here. I felt that it was also a bit clunky and disjointed at times and much longer than it needed to be. It's rare for a King novel to leave me wanting, but this one really did. I actually give this one a 2.5/5.

His novel Regulators is a retelling/related novel set in a parallel universe, and I had planned to read it but was put off by Desperation to be honest. I may re-read both and see if my impression of Desperation improves any.

It started getting confusing for me when David started mentioning those foregin language words. I also hate that:
Johnny Marinville died.

I read this & Regulators several years ago.
Desperation is one of my favorite Stephen King novels. It left me with a great sense of spirituality. There are some fantastic characters in this novel.

Didn't love Regulators though. But it was a quick & entertaining read. The characters in this one don't translate as well here.

I watched the made-for-tv movie of Desperation also. Not bad.

I've not read any of Stephen Kings new novels. Does he still write about his accident in every story he writes. Kinds of get old.

The story of Desperation sounds interesting.

I had the reverse situation. I've considered reading Desperation, but after reading The Regulators, I've been a bit put off. I liked the story over all, but I felt like the middle of the book went on and on and on ...

That just can't be a good sign can it. I really felt the same about Desperation, as far as I liked the 'whole' of the story, yet felt the writing went quite haywire in the middle and in certain other parts. With so many books to read in my pile at the moment, I feel The Regulators slipping even further down...
