Has anyone read the Gordianus the Finder series by Steven Saylor? They are set in Ancient Rome and follow Gordianus, a kind of private detective, over about fifty years.
They also cover some of the key events during the Caesar/Pompeii war but from the point of view of this ordinary family.

I Love the Gordianus series and have read them all, including the collected short stories, except for the latest, Raiders of the Nile. I'm saving that for a birthday treat (if I can hold out until May.)

ETA: The John Maddox Roberts series, set during Julius Caesar's rise to power is also very good. The protagonist is a poor nobleman in the early books.
