Stieg Larsson: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

I read this a while back on the very hot recomendation of my all familly,some of them already on the third of the Millenium trilogie.
That is maybe why i was taken aback for i had hight expectation. It turn out to be a good investigation thriller,original but not exceptional.
The characteres are atypical and the circle of high sweden finances is interesting,the story is also unpredictible which is escencial in this type of story(hate thriller when you guess the all way through).Knowing very little about Sweden,it was very nice to have a panorama,historical and geographic, in a simple active style that give you the feel for the place.I'm sure it would be even better for someone local for it full of reference that an outsider can get.
The millenium Books are getting really big in France as i think it is already in Sweden.It's the very fact of the trend that spoiles a book otherway very modest and good.A very good holiday read.
 
Just a remarque after my French holiday's where the book is abslolutly everywhere.One personne out of tree was reading it this summer.The last time i saw this was with the Alchemist by cuelho(not a good sign!)and da vinci code.
More it's a trilogie and they actualy go for the three...(big book they are)and one can't rejoice for the author for he died just after having been published.

I too read ... DRAGON TATTOO and found it as good as your family seems to have done. I have not read the two that follow because I am not sure they are available in the US yet. I have been reading alot of Swedish mystery/thriller/suspense writers over the last five years or so and find their works extraordinary. As a matter of fact all of the Scandanavians I have read in translation are awesome. I must check to see if Larsson's next 2 books are out here.
 
I think the book is exceptional, it deserves every bit of hype it has gotten and then some. I read it last year, started it one Saturday afternon and by Sunday evening I had already finished it. I could not put it down, I have lent my copy to 4 people already and have recommended it to everyone I know.
It is true that all 3 books have sold like fresh baguettes in France, but they have been doing so since 2006 when the first volume of the trilogy was plublished. They're not available in "poche" editions yet, which means that 3 years later people are still willing to pay 23€ to read each of these books.
I don't think that just because a book is enjoying this kind of commercial success it should be looked down upon, Larsson was a seasoned journalist who decided to write fiction. He did not intend to pass his work as serious historical research or a new spiritual path to enlightenment, he took the very dark and nasty things he knew about a society many people see as very clean, fair and organized, and weaved them into a marvelous thriller full of wonderfully multidimensional characters and unexpected twists and turns.
It's a real shame he didn't get to see even the first volume published, he died of a heart attack after handing the manuscripts to his editor.
 
What you say is very just.
It is not Da Vinci or the Achemist.It's a basic well construct thriller, well written too.I just fail to understand this manic attraction to it,that is all.It's just that the summer i read it,it was on every bar table,in the bus,friends house...like 1984.There was something scarry about it.I'll read the reste if the opportunity comes later on.

Sometimes a book possesses so many elements of literary merit it takes off like a rocket. "... Tattoo " is one of those novels that become a phenomenon. It is such a well plotted, stylish, interesting and carries the shadow of the writer's death. He was a journalist which makes his style accessable. Combine that with a really interesting story and you've got a winner. Another adjunct
IMHO is that the book has been translated into English, opening its popularity to a vast audience.

I didn't know it was part of a trilogy ... do you know the titles books 2 and 3?

The English translation of book 2, "The girl who played with fire", is coming out later this year in the US. As for book three, I haven't found any info on when it will come out in English.
Do you read Spanish? Book 2 is already available in Latin America (at least in some countries) and Spain, book 3 is coming out later this year.
Personally, I like the Spanish and French titles of the books a lot better...

saliotthomas, I hope you didn't think I was having a go at you for not liking the book and if you did, je m'en excuse! I respect your opinion and I also understand how such popularity might put you off (I refuse to see the most recent best picture Oscar winner for similar reasons).
 
Thank you for the heads up on the Steig Larsson books. Unfortunately English is the only language I know so I will wait patiently un til THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE is released here in the US.

I have to add myself to the list of readers that liked the book, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo very much. It is well constructed and definitely left me with a strong feeling to finish the trilogy. Unfortunately, although I have the second one, I haven't read it yet due to life situations. It's verra near the top of the list though. The character of Salander is wonderful, and the excerpt at the end of #1 certainly is the main instigator for my purchasing the second one as quickly as I did.

I registered today and this is my first post (excluding introducing myself in the new members section).

I also add myself to the list of people who liked The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I bought the book with modest expectations and was very pleasantly surprised to find myself engrossed in the story. A few chapters in, I dashed off to the book store and bought the second book - The Girl Who Played With Fire - so that I would have it on hand when I finished the first book.

The Girl Who Played With Fire was even better than the first book (IMO).

I now have book three - The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest - but I haven't started it yet. It's an intimidatingly huge tome and I'd like to start reading when I have a chunk of quiet time. Tomorrow's a public holiday in South Africa so I guess that will be a good day to start. :)

Its an incredible book and the film is said to be a very close adaptation.

I agree PlaypitsPark. I could not put the book down once I started it. Going to start the second one this coming weekend. Hope it is just as good as the first. Can't wait
 
Uhm, this may sound like a silly question, but why do they need to redo a film that's been released only two years ago?
 
Americans don't read subtitles? Pretty much every more or less successful non-English-language movie gets a quick remake these days...
