I have just read The Mermaid Chair and thought it equally beautiful if not more lovely than The Secret Life of Bees. I am now looking up some of her non fiction books.
 
I really want to read The Mermaid Chair, but the library has like 50 holds on it and it's too expensive to buy right now. I shall wait. I don't wait well.

It was an entertaining read, but wholly unremarkable. I finished not really loving or hating it.
 
My library book club had several events and discussions last month about the Secret Life of Bees and they pushed it pretty hard so I read it and I thought it was a good book. I think Novella has a point comparing it to, To Kill a Mockingbird, they do seem very similiar. I put the Mermaid Chair on hold.
 
By Sue Monk Kidd. This book is amazing. Although the story isn't an "amazing" plot...I would say...the way it is written is so great. Although , I think Lily(the main character) would've acted differently if an actual 14 year old wrote the book.
 
loved the book. I hadn't read it, even though I love Southern Lit and my boss told me I had to pick it up. I did and thought it was amazing.
 
I LOVED this book- I wasn't sure I was going to at first but I fell more in love with each page I read.
 
I read The Secret Life of Bees a few years ago, and was surprised that I enjoyed it so much. Alas, the details are faded, but it left a pleasant memory/vibes with me. :) Her last book, The Mermaids Chair is in my TBR stack. Somewhere. :eek:
 
I read "The Secret Life of Bees" in august. I found the book through a Norwegian online bookstore. It was one of the new pocket releases. It seemed like a good read and I bought it. It was laying in my TBRpile for some weeks.

I really enjoyed Sue Monk Kidd's easy way of writing. She told a beautiful story with out using any big words.

After finishing the book I had to cheek out more books of SMK. I just finished the Mermaid Chair. Not quit so good as the secret life of bees, but still a good read.

I recommend both of them.
 
Yes one of my all time favs' also. Especially liked the part where the girl and one of the sisters sit on the bench together near the end of the book and the truth is told about the girls mothers leaving in such a gentle manor (sorry got a mind like a siff and can't remember names)
 
I really, really enjoyed this book. So much so that I gave it as a gift for a relative along with some lovely Tupelo honey just to play on the theme of the bees. :)

I had no idea she had another book out. I'm off to go put The Mermaid Chair on my request list at the library.

To those of you who enjoyed this book I think you would also like The Help by Stockett. Similar theme as it takes place in the south during the civil rights era.
