Suggested reading for 14 year old.

Greetings

My daughter keeps complaining that she has run out of reading material so I am seeking suggestions for new books/authors.

She is a great fan of the Harry Potter books and also enjoys the work of Darren Shan, though she found the most recent work disappointing.

I suggested the David Eddings "Belgariad" books (that I am currently reading myself) but she couldn't get into them.

Any ideas of books that may suit her?

I read "Jane Eyre" at 13 and was completely taken with it.

Jenny Nimmo's Charle Bone series is good. Also Children of the Lamp by P.B Kerr is great. If she likes alittle mystery Chasing Vermeer by Brett Helquist or Skullduggery Pleasant. I really enjoyed all of these. I have a weakness for young adult fiction. I also have two kids. They are not quite ready for these. They are only 8 and 6. I highly recommend any of these.

When I was 14, I was reading Gone With the Wind and Scarlett. I had seen the movie over and over since I was little. I know that my required reading when I was a Freshman was pretty good, too! We read The Great Gatsby, Great Expectations and Lord of the Flies. Of Mice and Men was an easy read, she could do that in a weekend.

I remember reading a lot of plays, especially Shakespeare. If she hasn't yet read any, I would suggest Much Ado About Nothing, it was the easiest to decipher.

I read The Perks of Being a Wallflower when I was fourteen and have since bought it to add to my collection of treasured books. It's a really great story about a kid who's got some real issues, but has fun anyway. He's a freshman in high school, and meets up with a couple of seniors and makes friends with them. I looked through the link, and it doesn't seem to give any spoilers or anything, to give you and her a better idea of the story. I always like to do that before reading something, for some reason.
