I would like to second The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. I think it is perfect for October. Plus, it is on my bookshelf and I haven't read it yet. :)

i've never read the exorcist so i think that would be great for the scary month too... i hadnt seen that post, and i like it ^_^ if i could add a third vote for it ;)
