I am interested in ordering Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" but it seems like there are version after version. So I was hoping maybe I could get pointed in the right direction! If anyone is familiar with multiple versions of this book could you please give me your opinion on the best version which is the easiest to apply and understand?!?!?! thank you for any input which you can give me!!

There are many translations out there. The one I like the best is Denma Translation Group's Sun Tzu The Art of War. It is accurate and has a very good analysis. It took the Denma group over ten years to translate and compile there analysis. It is based mostly on the Yin Chueh Shan text, deciphered from bamboo strips (dated 140 - 118 B.C.).

Keep in mind these are translations of an ancient chinese text, so you kind of have to ask yourself which is more important: accuracy or readability. For both you shoud consider:

I have twelve versions of the art of warfare, all are a little different but essentially the same.

A book I really like, although it is not a translation of Sun Tzu, is The art of modern warfare by Mark Mcneilly. The author uses the wars of recent history to illustrate the concepts and lessons in Sun Tzu's teachings. This is a must read if you are an armchair general.

Any questions let me know. I am pretty familiar with this subject.

What made you decide to read Sun Tzu?

a friend had mentioned it to me. then while looking for it i came acrossed copy after copy! thank you for your feedback!!!

My copy is the Samuel B. Griffith translation with an excellent foreword by B.H. Liddell Hart. I have read bits and pieces of others, though I truly enjoyed this version of it.
