TBF Top 100 Scifi List Discussion

Hey guys! I'm just dropping a note to ask those who visit Science Fiction and Fantasy forum to vote for your books. You don't have to post a whole big list, just a couple will do just fine too. There are plenty of well-read sff people out here, so let's hear it!

Ainulindale, we know of your lists, but wanna spend 2 minutes to list out your best and worst 3 books?

Koorkamoor, Martin, Wabbit, mgarratty, Zolipara, Sell Sword, Toadal, Shade, care to share? Anyone, really, is welcome to vote even a single book.

You people like any of the Harry Potter books that much?? I'm bemused as to how any of them are in the Top 10. Whatever I guess its just me.. didn't really like it all that much to .. smiple I don't know. Makes a better moive than a book IMHO.

Correct if i'm wrong but the Only Baen author i've seen so far is Bujold??? Don't any of you sci fi people read David Weber's work?

I generally don't likw particpating in open to the public polls, I know whats popular, I can see the Best Seller Lists. I like both Rowling and Tolkien, but any lists that strongly support them as the best or highest rated is to heavily waited on elements I don't use myself.

The peoplw that would recommend what I feel are good books, are going to be more critical and responsible in there ratings thus pushing down the ratings of the qualtiy books. The fanboys, and younger members are just going to give popular titles high 9's or 10's

The fact Rowling has such a profound presence already has tainted the list, at least in regards to my desire to what to particpate. (and I enjoy the Potter series).

I'm not knocking anyones preferences but IMHO the poll is a good idea, I just don't think it can be executed and completed with any desired veracity (again in regards to my interests).

A better way to do it one at a time let there be a discussion on a book/series, then a grade by each person who particpated then average it out, and then work from there.

if somone like's a series let them tell us why, if they do'nt let them tell why not - it's just hard for me to buy Rowling owning so many of the top positions, I enjoy the series but it's ridiculous, and only indicative of popularity IMHO.

I think Weber is one of the worst authors I have ever read, personally.
 
Ainulindale, I'm sorry you feel this way. You are one of our most well-read members in scifi/fantasy, and if for nothing else it would be great for those of us here less informed about the better works of fantasy/scifi to benefit from your evaluation.

I know what you're trying to say with regards to the list. However it would be remiss if you took the list as literally as your post implied. In the first place, we are too few here in TBF to accurately reflect what's good and what isn't. Plus, as you've pointed out, the rankings are not perfect.

However, I think it would be great if we could have what every scifi/fantasy reader think is their favourite books. There's no way my Kays or Le Guins are going to top the list, but I like to read what other prolific readers think are good books, and share what I myself have enjoyed. I'm amazed at the sort of books I initially passed up, but found to be quite good after reading votes from people whom I know share my tastes.

You'd be surprised how many of us share what you think is good and what isn't. It's when everyone abstains from voting because they believe they will not make a difference that leaves the list as it stands.

Sorry, but there will not be a compiled list for this month. It's extraordinarily difficult for me to do online stuff at present, but I'll try and get next month's list out early.

While compiling this month's list, I have a couple of things:
1. Thanks to JackOCat (though s/he's missing now) for compiling the list of books rated at 10. That would be a good list to add to next month...
2. Guys, there is no half points! So PSYCHO and lindaj, I've rounded down your votes with .5s, so if you voted 9.5, I've gone conservative and put it down as 9. Let me know if you wanna change this, and the change will be reflected in next month's list.

I did not vote so perhaps I shouldn't make this comment but.....doesn't ANYONE like T.E. Modesitt as a writer of Sci Fi / Fantasy???? :confused:

I haven't voted yet, but will do so shortly.

I would like to make a request. Can the list of top 100 by rating also reflect number of votes? Arange the list first by rating then by votes, so that if there is more than one book rated as 9 (and there are) the ones with more votes will be higher on the list.

I think this is more representative, as it is easy for a book to be 9 or 10 with one vote, but much more difficult if it has 2,3 + votes
 
Oh, another suggestion. How about changing the rating system? I know this might be difficult at this stage, but I realy strugle to rate something out of 10. A rating out of five is (for me) much easier and more accurate. People mostly give a rating of 7,8,9 or 10 anyway, and a 1,2,3,4 and 5 is mostly meaningless. With a score out of 5 you can rate something as 1: Horrible; 2:Very poor read; 3: Mediocre, 4: Good read, 5: Excellent! A more representative score.

I always struggle to determine what the weight of my score is with a scale out of 10: is an 8 a ‘good’ or ‘exelent’? Is a 9 a ‘very good’ or a ‘superb’? A poor book is this a 5 or 4 or even a 3?
 
Hugin - I think that's a good suggestion. I will incorporate that into the new list.

With regards to the 1 to 5 scale of rating, yes, it will be a little difficult to change that now. I do have a suggestion - all you have to do is to give the book you're rating from 1 to 5, and when you are ready to cast your vote, just multiply that by 2. You could then 'tweak' the number you get, i.e. 'Yeah well, it's 4 out of 5 but I'm not sure if it's really 8 out of 10. Maybe a 7 out of 10.'

Mmmm, I gues that is a rather obvious answer, but have to admit I never even considered it.

Even on current authors it's rather laughable that Jordan and Goodkind are on a list and China Mieville is not mentioned in. How many people participated in this?

Sorry for the late reply. I guess I meant More than Human by Sturgeon.

Over in the UK Philip K Dick's published short stories have been published in 5 stories that have been around for sometime. As the stories and the way they've been compiled vary greatly around the world, I guess they'd be difficult to compile into your list.

I'll take note of this Sturgeon book - shouldn't be too much of a task considering it's only been, what... a century since anyone has shown any interest in this thread? :)

Hmm... something must be done to wash the bad stigma attached to this place... it really is a cheerful place.
