The Most overrated fiction book ever?

Atlanta Nights has to be the worst book cos it was designed to be. Compulsive reading all the same.

Battlefield Earth by Ron Hubbard has to be one of the worst that wasn't supposed to be.

Agree.... Da Vinci Code.... Overrated.
I liked Catch 22 though.. The Bridge in Madison County, never walked over it, never read it ,but saw the film and must confess.... it didn't move me to tears, even though everyone else was sniffling discreetly. :confused:
 
Nouvella.. You are right.... It's the smell in the air, a scent..in all of Lawrence's
writings. I love "The Woman Who Rode Away." A wonderful short story. It was one of the last pieces I read by him.

I loved the Da Vinci Code!!! It was so entertaining I couln't put it down. I love books that try to solve mysteries from the past and I thought it was awsome that he challenged all those christains with the whole jesus having a child thing.

Also The Time Traveller's Wife, while probably not a litterary classic, was an entertaining story and had a really sweet ending. I definitely thought it was worth the read.
 
I think both Catcher in the Rye and Catch 22 are great reads. Maybe it is a guy thing. The Lord of the Rings is not over rated (it is a ground breaking fantasy - no one says it is top 100 fiction material), maybe over hyped recently (a lot of money was to be made) but it has a 50 year track record.
Davinci Code - to be over-rated it has to be rated. It is just (as mentioned above) the flavor of the month. It is always the popular stuff that gets put on peoples worst-of list. Speaking of flavor of the month - Harry Potter over rated for it genre (youth books).
I would say The Great Gatsby. While it is very good, it does not strike me is it obviously does for others.

It came number one in a recent British TV poll so quite a lot of Brits would say it is top 100. I think the Big Read poll took place about the time FOTR came out at the cinema so the hype was beginning but I still think it would have won.

Here is the top 100. Granted it's a British poll but what in there is overrated? On a side note how many have you read?

I think in a few years time Harry Potter will have slipped down a bit but like I said TLOTR will stay up there I think.

i beg to differ i think harry potter will be there just as long as lord of the rings in years to come there will be thirty something year olds becoming nostalgic while thinking of quidditch and the dark lord. harry potter will be read by kids and adults for years to come just like lotr and each will be high on my list of fav fiction
 
Thats a popularity poll - actually for "the nation's best loved novel". Not exactly what I meant. I'm a fantasy reader and it (LOTR) is in my top ten of fantasy books. On the other hand I would not call it a great literature novel.
(I guess it would come down to exactly what I mean by literature - I would rather read LOTR again over say Moby Dick, but Moby Dick is a great novel)
 
Uh oh, some people replying are saying that "The Great Gatsby" is a boring book. I just purchased the book at the book store, am I in trouble?

Fiction? Are you off your rocker?

The Old Testament is a history of the Jewish people. Fair enough there are some dubious elements such as a burning bush, Jericho's walls falling after seven days of trumpeting, and the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego but there's not much that can be faulted. The Creation in Genesis has many similarities to Darwin's Theory of Evolution.

The New Testament, of course, is a mishmash of hearsay.

No, it's my own conclusion from a couple of years ago and is my usual response in one of those creation v evolution threads that appear every now and again. I can't find the post where I go into detail on it. :(

I don't think I could read Dave Gorman. I've seen his book in shops but these slightly comic, preachy things (I'm guessing!) are not my thing. That goes for Michael Moore too.
 
Gorman's stuff is purely for comic effect, although perhaps revealing a borderline obsessive personality at times. Oh, and it's thankfully nothing like Michael Moore.

It is nice to hear that people dislike Catcher in the rye and the great gatsby. I'd heard such great things about them and was really excited before reading them, needless to say i was utterly disapponted.

I'm currently reading Catch-22 and its hard to find anything wrong with it
