Especially when they didn't actually claim to predict the future. Thinking the world is going to end because the Mayan calendar "ends" is a bit like thinking the world should have ended on Saturday because the Gregorian calendar ends on December 31st.

Mayans Protest Government Sponsored Apocalypse Party and Slam

As the date of December 21, 2012 approaches the hype has caused an increasing amount of distress for the indigenous Mayan people, especially with their homeland in Guatemala being turned into a cheap tourist attraction for the coming “apocalypse”.
