The Kindle uses eInk (longer battery life over LCD). The Kindle Fire uses a backlit LCD.
If you have Amazon Prime, you should be buying a Kindle Fire instead of a Nook HD. If you don't have Amazon prime and are not planning on getting it, then it really doesn't matter which you get.
Nook books can't be read on Kindle, and Kindle books can't be read on Nook. This may have changed since the last time I checked, but at least one of them cannot be read on the other. [/url]
I wouldn't get any of the HD tablet like ereaders. If you're looking to get a Nook HD, get an ipad or windows tablet and download an ereader app.
If you're looking to get an eReader, get one with eInk display - I have the nook Simple Touch. It looks and feels like a book and will be MUCH easier on your eyes in the long run.
We use computers and touch screen phones and tablets so much these days we forget that the screens are essentially light bulbs that we're staring at all day.
