I usually don't read poetry mainly because I don't 'get' it. I had to read Thom Gunn's The Man with Night Sweats for a course in uni and I thought it was brilliant. Gunn was living in San Francisco at the time - several poems were written while Gunn was happy before the AIDS outbreak in the 80s, others written during that time, and one or two at the end of it. These poems are so honest and genuine without trying to be fancy ... I really recommend them if you get a chance.
