Through the looking glass, alice in wonderland. Book Questions!

I have a book with the title of "Alice in Wonderland". On the page where the publish date should be all that is printed there is "printed in the United States of America, By special arrangment with Grosset and Dunlap" their is no date for being published located anywhere in the book. It was written by Lewis Carroll and the illustrations are by John Tenniel. This book also has "Through the Looking Glass" published inside of it. I was needing to know as much information as you could give me about this book, including how much it is worth. It is blue, on the spine of the book near the top it has Best Loved Classics. At the end of the book, right after "Through the Looking Glass" is done it has an editors note. The editors note reads:

"The initial letters of this poem when read downward give the full name of the original Alice-- Alice Pleasance Liddell."

The only other thing I can think of to say about this book is it is hardback.

I also have two more books called "Huckleberry Finn" and "Treasury of Poems". I was needing to know some information about this and the price as well. The "Treasury of Poems" has no publish date as well, where the publish date should be it reads:

Illustrations and Special Contents
Copyright MCMXLIX
By Book Production industries, Inc.
Chicago

Printed in the United States Of America.

On the Spine of the book it has "Best Loved Classics" on the top, the title in the middle and at the bottom says "Anthology".

On "Huckleberry Finn" it reads:

Special contents and illustrations copyright 1953 by Spencer Press, INC.

This is an exact verbatim reprint of the first edition of Samuel L. Clemens' book and it incorporates all typographical errors as well as other peculiarities of the genuine, rare first edition.

Printed in the United States Of America.

I want any information you could give me about these books as well as how much they are worth. They are in Mint Condition or a very Near Mint. All are blue hardback books.

You'll be unlikely to find anyone that can sensibly price the book here. AbeBooks would be a better bet. The likelihood is that they aren't worth much at all, as limited editions, first editions, and signed first editions are where a book picks up a heftier price in the collectibles market. All else is typically a pittance at a jumble sale.

Thank you, I was looking at abebooks at the alice and wonderland and through the looking glass and they had it priced at $17,000.. I was like Holy Crap... Is that right....

Sure it does. MCMXLIX = 1949.

Generally speaking, as Stewart says, used books are priced by edition and condition. A first edition in near mint condition can be worth a fortune. A mass-market reprint from 70 years after first publication or a generic anthology is unlikely to be worth more than a few bucks unless there's something very special about it.

Is that Roman Numeral then? Awesome, I am actually starting to like this site just from you two members alone lol. You are a lot of help! So, is their anything I could check on the books to see if they are reprints or how do I figure that out?

Stewart: I am not sure, I just googled the book name and abe books came up with that price. So I thought I would look around a little more and that's when I found this forum.

You might start by checking the original publishing date of the book. Huckleberry Finn, for instance, was published in 1884. It's a pretty good guess that the 1953 edition isn't a first run.

lol, yea I guess that would be pretty good start. Is there anything else that could be done to check?
