Why do I always hear people talking about books for 25p, books for 50p, books for one quid?

Over here, even in a discount-store, I pay up to several euro's for even the smallest book!

Most places here, these days are 1/2 off the cover price with a flat minimum fee of something like $2.50. That place I used to get books for a quarter was the only place like that in town AND, they only did for books they had way too many copies for. This meant only romance and maintsream fiction wound up on those shelves. So it was difficult to find the "diamonds in the rough" -- not impossible, but I couldn't tell you 90% of the titles or authors I read from those shelves as most of them just didn't impress me enough to stick in my mind.
