Top 100 Sci-Fi Books (online survey)

That is an impressive list. I see lots of books there I have not read. Looks like I need to start buying those.
 
Interesting list. I'm more of a fantasy person myself, but I've read quite a few of these. I was surprised to see Mary Shelley's Frankenstein on the list - not because I don't agree that it belongs there, but because I never really considered it Sci-Fi. But I guess it does belong in that genre. I love that book...
 
Pretty good list. I thought 'F-451' and '1984', since both have been influencing man's thinking for longer than some of the other titles, should have been higher on the list.

Noticed Ursula K LeGuin had two entries, except they rated 'Left Hand of Darkness' higher than 'The Lathe of Heaven'. It should be reversed. 'Lathe' was a much better book.

I would mention to all you LeGuin fans that she lives in the Portland, Oregon area and is accessible. If you send her an 8.5 x 11" SASE with a nice letter, she will send you prints of some of her book covers. Nice lady, trust me on this. Address is on her main website. Easy google find.
 
How odd that Bradbury and Orwell rank so low. I think many of us forget what impact Bradbury had on the likes of Stephen King and how vibrant The Martian Chronicles was and still is, bridging a style between USA writing and European style vignettes.
 
Another annoyance is that Theodore Sturgeon is so far down the list - that is plain barmy - we think Sturgeon should be applauded more, no one writes like him and no one has come close to his ideas. Also, there is no Zebrowski either!

I so agree with you. Bradbury completely changed my view on literature.
From reading gothic romance (Victoria Holt), horror(Poe. Lovecraft, Hawthorne, King) to Farmer, Asimov, Heinlein. Even tho my reading preferences have changed to mostly fantasy of all styles Bradbury will always be my favorite writer of all times.
 
Frankenstein, 1984 and Flatland

I am also surprised by Frankenstein, as well as 1984 and Flatland - all good thought-provoking books, but somehow they had not registered with me before as science fiction.

Ursula LeGuin has three books there and I can't say which is best as I loved them all. The Left Hand of Darkness has a special place in my heart. I listened to it on tape while driving a boring stretch of interstate and was appalled when the book ended before the journey.
 
Not surprised that Dune was on the top of the list. I wish more people would read Dune. It one of my fevorite books ever.

It gets weird but I still found it to be a very worthwhile read. I can see why some wouldn't like it, but I think it's worth at least trying for yourself to see if you're one of them, rather than just stopping because you heard bad things.
