TV Turn Off Week is mostly aimed at kids who come home after school at 3 and plop down in front of the tv until bedtime. The kids growing up now are the fattest generation and the entertain me generation. They don't get outside and exercise their bodies, they don't stay in and exercise their minds, they just exercise their thumbs on ps2 controllers and tv remotes. Even reading fluff, in my opinion, is better than staring into space. I do limit the tv my kids watch. It is not allowed on until everyone's homework is done, or unless I want to watch something like the news. I don't watch much tv, just a few shows that I like. I'm more likely to be reading.
Never been much of a tv-watcher myself...but I certainly doubt watching Discovery channel programs can be bad for you. The problem with tv is that it is addictive because of the way the lines cross (I'd go into more depth, but I don't have time this morning). I found when I stopped watching tv entirely, not due to any specific week, I just decided there was nothing on that I really wanted to watch, that I can now hardly sit still for enough time to watch an entire show. I'm up and doing this and that or I give up and read a book. Now reading....I can do that for hours on end without jumping up and down every five minutes. I guess I'd rather see the pictures in my mind than the pictures in my eyes.
In honour of Turn Off Your TV and Read Week, I have been having my own personal 'Turn Off Your Computer and Watch TV' week, where I actually watched some TV for the first time in about six months ....
.... yup, still the same old crap on. Currently I have watched - two movies I've already seen, several reality TV programmes I never wish to see again and half an episode of Desperate Housewives ... oh, and the football.
Next Week ... stand by for 'Stop Sitting About on your Arse and Go Jogging Week'!! I somehow dont see this one being as much fun.
My grandaughter (in 10th grade - 2 years ago) asked for these books for Christmas that year.
Dawn We Slept: The Untold Story of Pearl Harbor ~ Gordon William Prange, With Donald M. Goldstein, With Katherine V. Dillon
RFK Collected Speeches ~ Edited By Guthman and Allen
Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong ~ James W Loewen
I had a heck of a time finding the RFK book but finally got a good used copy for $38. Several places were asking over $100 for it used, it is out of print.
