Vampire Novel Recommendations

Okay, confession here. I don't read romance novels, but I loved this one - The Mummy by Anne Rice. Vampires? No. But once you get into it you'll understand why a couple of us posted it here.

I am still waiting for the sequel Rice promised!

The Prussian :)

I believe someone else has already mentioned Brian Lumleys Necroscope series, but the trilogy also from Lumley, Blood Brothers, The Last Aerie, and Bloodwars are excellent vampire reads as well. :)

Well if your a fan of Laurell K Hamilton, I suggest trying the Dark Hunters series by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
I personally love it, it gives a whole new twist on vampies!

Vampire$ by John Steakley

Has only written 1 other (great) sci-fi book. A man of few, but great words.

Also like many other people have suggested "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson. The man who inspired King. I personally have not read it but I hear it's wonderful.

Other than Anne Rice...

Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Comte de Saint Germain novels,

Fevre Dream - George R .R. Martin
I am Legend - Richard Matheson
The Keep - F. Paul Wilson
The Vampyre and Supping with Panthers - Tom Holland (Lord Byron as a vampire).
The Vampire Diaries - LJ Smith (there are about five or six books)
Vampire Junction and Valentine - S P Somtov
The Silver Kiss - Annette Curtis Klause
The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova
Lost Souls - Poppy Z Brite

Tanith Lee wrote a couple of good vampire short stories; Les Daniels has written a series about a Spanish vampire.

There's also one recent book I can't remember the name of with the main character called Whistler.

Out of all of these I would rate Fevre Dream and The Keep. But some of the good anthologies of vampire short stories are very good indeed.

I am currently readin The Vampre Sextette which is (obviously) a book with six vampire stories. I would send it to you when I finish it if I could.

I sure would like to be able to send books that I buy but don't want to keep to others on the board. Anyway - most stories are ok, one is great and one was awful (I haven't finifshed the last one yet!).

I actually don't read many besides the Buffy and Angel tie in novels but there were a couple of PN Elrod ones I liked. They're co-written with Nigel Benett from Forever Knight. (actually FK also has three tie in novels that are available secondhand, like Ebay or ABE or something that I've read)

Keeper of the King
His Father's Son
Siege Perilous.-haven't read yet but am anxious to get my hands on it

They're a mix of a sort of earth based or pagan vamp and Arthurian stuff. Lancelot was Richard DeOrleans, a knight turned vampire and the Lady of the Lake was Sabra, his sire. Now he's Richard Delabarr living in Toronto. The first book involves a search for the Holy Grail.

I should also try to find the ones that go with FOREVER AND THE NIGHT which I read sometime back.

The only ones that I can think of offhand were what I read in my youth. A Darker Dream was pretty good. It's about a woman who falls in love with a vampire.

I could never get through any of Anne Rice's novels, and I was particularly lucky if I could trudge past the first chapter. I even tried her non-vampire books too.

Anyone know any good vampire novels?

I'm a huge fan of vampire movies and novels. I have read the first eight Anita Blake books, and I don't plan to read further because I don't like the way Laurell K. Hamilton is taking the character. I have Interview With A Vampire by Anne Rice and plan to buy some more...I also own Dracula, a weird but good book called How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire, and Those Who Hunt the Night by Barbara Hambly.
Any reccomendations will be taken into consideration. However, I should warn that I don't like vampire novels where the whole thing is porn. I prefer books with some romance mixed into them in some way, but I'm not adverse to a non-romantic novel. With that said...I hope I get some good ideas for what I want to buy!

I saw that, but the person who posted that was clearly interested in the kind of vampire books I am not...that is clear by the person mentioning reading the entire Anita Blake series and apparently liking it. While that's cool and all, I'm looking for different kinds of vampire novels and I wanted to make sure I was getting information about "great books" that weren't over-sexed.
I did read over that thread and considered posting in it, but it was so old I figured no one would reply to tell me which books were and weren't what I was looking for. Also, in the past three years, new books have come out that I don't necessarily know about. T_T I found some stuff on Amazon.com but I'm having trouble finding reliable opinions on vampire books.
Again, any help is appreciated!!!

Dhampir, Thief of Lives, and Sister of the Dead by J.C. and Barb Hendee are excellent. There is a fourth book out now, I think, but I haven't bought/read it yet.

You already mentioned Interview, but if you can get your hands on the rest of Anne Rice's chronicles you'll be in for a treat. My favourite is The Vampire Lestat (gotta love an anti-hero).

The vampire genre is as wide and diverse as any other genre, so what you want to read is very much up to you.

If you want books that are similar to Laurell K. Hamilton I would recommend:

Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Series (Dead until dark is number one)
Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series (Dead witch walking is number one)
Jim Butcher's Dresden Files (Storm Front).
Mary Janice Davidson's Undead series (Undead and unwed). Less mystery, m ore romance.
Tanya Huff's Vicki Nelson series (Blood Price).
Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series. No vampires, but same sort of story (Ill Wind).

If you want more "serious" vampire books:

Richard Matheson's I am Legend
Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian
Bram Stoker's Dracula

I just finished Already Dead by Charlie Huston. GREAT book! Pulp noir detective/vampire together in one tough package. Part of a planned 5- or 6-book series. Highly recommended for detective and vampire fans!

I too share in the appreciation of the very popular Interview and The Vampire Lestat but I have to say that of all the Vampire Chronicles I find Tale of the Body Thief to be the best. It is a wonderful representation of how "the other half lives."
Lestat crosses pathes with what is described as a "Body Thief" who can jumpfrom one body to the next in a kind of possession of sorts and Lestat, for the first time in over 400 years has to cope with being mortal again.
You should really give this one a try as you would'nt be skipping much in the way of story from the other two books.
Now The Vampire ArmandI have to say is one of the most overly descriptive and painfully uninteresting books I've ever read. At this point I thought Anne Rice was milking the undead cow a little too often and coming up very dry.
Hope this helps.

Sunshine

In addition to the many good books mentioned: Sunshine by Robin McKinley. Really great, sexy and scary, and kick started me into a vampire reading spree.

Also, in the same style as Charlaine Harris, Tanya Huff and Jim Butcher, there's One foot in the grave by Wm. Mark Simmons. Cool, exciting and quotes English poets ;)
