Victor Huge and Church Protection

I have a few questions that I hope someone here can provide me references to. This is with regards to 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame,' and 'Les Miserables.'
I can think of some examples, but as it has been a while since I read the two novels I don't have exact references, plus I could always use further examples.
My subject refers to the times in which the Church provides sanctuary or protection to those being sought after.
Can you provide me with examples and references to such events, from these two classics if it is not too much trouble?
