Vladimir Nabokov: The Real Life Of Sebastian Knight

ROFLOLTIC Peder. I will keep the notes. I, er, sent text messages to myself. I'm sad, I know.

But can I ask a question? Should I spoiler it? I will...

Is the real question not who killed Sebastian, but why?

In the cool calm clear of the evening, here's how the novel breaks out for me:

Part I - Introduction - Chapters 1-4
Family recollections, letters

Part II - Development - Chapters 5-12
Interviews, conversations

Part III - Climax - Chapter 13
The inimitable, immortal, one and only Silbermann, all by himself!

Part IV - Resolution - Chapters 14-17
The Search

Part V - Conclusion - Chapters 18-20
Sebastian Knight. Calm and Repose.

A truly memorable novel!
About novels, authors, writing, people, life, death.
Nabokov never gives short change!
Peder
No he doesn't, and neither do you Peder.
Love the break down into segments. Verra Logical and well put.
Most extremely  .
:D

Hi Steffe,
I still am resisting your first spoiler
Spoiler reason: I'm still trying to decipher 'Ninka' puzzle.
Re question:
Spoiler answer: I think he died natural death in hospital toward end of book, unless you have reason to think otherwise; which I would be be very glad to hear. That might start a glorious round of speculation!!
Spoiler speculation: I have a wild speculation of my own, about Ninka.
My homework is not near done with Mr. Nabokov, :)
But soon, soon,
/famous last words/ :)

Steffee,
I think that's cute, and a very nice kind of 'sad' ROTFLOL.
That breakthrough thought might even have been enough to get VN to abandon using index cards. :)
Peder

BTW Steffee,
Really love your dramatic new avatar!
Neato, with the border! :)
Peder

Oh, I changed my avatar again. I prefer the other one too, might go and change it back.

Completely lost with the 'Ninka' stuff, so will have to reread myself now. Hmmm.

Steffee,
/chuckling/
That leaves two of us lost right there, right at the moment!
I read the words. I underline them. But they just will not make sense!
Getting to share you headache. :(

Awww no, not a headache Peder! Go and rest.

Put the book down!

And have a drink (without it!)
Steffee,
Many, many thanks!
Your friendly suggestion is really appreciated, :)
And you won't get any disagreement from me at all!
I am now on official break after all the brain strain. :D
And I think Nabokov has far outdone himself with this one.
Truly!
and Oy!

Wonderful!

Oy.....Ninka.../sigh/

Already in my PJ's, too late for a coffee trip. Drat! :(
But, Ninka! There's a name that will live. Ah, what a gal!
And Pontalba, everything was going just fine in the relaxing department, until you put up your new tag line. Especially that one. OY! But I'll make believe I didn't see it, at least for a long while. :D
I had completely forgotten about that puzzle. I dont think I'm up to it again!
Peder
with mind of mush just now.
This is going to be an early evening.

Pontalba,
Those women drove me absolutely crazy!
And the spider....eeeeeeeew!
But now those pages are safely locked up in a little box inside my desk and I am not going to reread about those women again!
Instead I am going to reread that non-murder mystery-within-a-mystery to see what help it might have for understanding the ending, or else maybe wreaking absolute havoc with it. /sigh/
And then maybe reread the ending again, ...and then....dunno what ..../wanders around in a daze/. Maybe flop down on a blue couch.
Peder

BTW The Baker Street Irregulars just simply turned around and went home when they heard the story. Lot of help they were!

But before I do that, let me add another log to the speculative fire.
Suppose, just suppose, totally in our imagiantions, that Virginia had been Sebastian's wife, not his father's, who walked out on him when he took up with Clare, and had wandered the south of France only to hook up with Pahl Pahlich. And suppose Sebastian had gone looking for her, only to learn of Ninka Toorevets, and then .....
And then we might have had the story of unhappy love we just had, with the bonus of learning V's and Sebastian's last name. :D
But no, enough brain-strain for one story.
"You can't see de odder side of de moon. Please donnt search de woman."
I go read, :)
Peder

OMG Peder! I hope not, thats all I can say! Oy.
But I will say this, it does bring out how men and women seem to be attracted to the type of person a parent of the opposite sex is.

Does that sentence make any sense whatsoever? IOW, a girl will (many, many times) be attracted to the "type" that her father is. And the same of the son. A son is attracted to the 'type' his mother happens to be. Whether or not they [/I]want to be or not.[/I]
Note: I'm staying away from all complexes. Period!

Or is that too simplistic outlook?

Pontalba,
"Staying away?" I would say not very far.
And "too simplistic?" The man with the "u" in his name didn't seem to think so! :D
I myself have always leaned to the theory that the person tries to marry the type they see and love in the mirror every morning. Which is why husbands look like their wives, yadda, yaddda, yadddda. If they do.
And which may be why that femme fatale with the "n" in her name could get interested in both Sebastian and then V.
