Sebastian is in the mail. He wasn't in the mall, so he's now in the mail. ;)
Still,
That's great news, as great as also hearing your voice here in the thread!
We get lonely here, ya know.

Zow! At a price like that, definitely on-line!
The novels over here tend to run about $13-$14 in the store (Borders) but, even at that, on-line purchase is attractive. Not to mention the possibility of used purchases for pricier items, e.g Boyd's biography, in nearly unused condition..

Ms. I've found that Amazon is the cheapest. But I wonder if there is something like Powells.com over there? They have really good 2nd hand hardbacks available. I've bought KQKand Laughter in the Dark in hardback there at much cheaper than anywhere else. But some are outrageous. For example of a hardback of "Lolita" can run into hundreds of dollars. No way. :( :(

ABE (American Book Exchange) since they have listings from abroad may be equally available and convenient from abroad.

ABE Books

I use them for my last-resort book searches and they frequently have what I am looking for. Easier finds generally fall first to either amazon or Powell's.

The Real Life of Sebastian Knight

Well! Finished. Now to digest.
Very interesting.
p.88
The door opens. Sebastian Knight is disclosed lying spread-eagled on the floor of his study. Clare is making a neat bundle of the typed sheets on the desk. The person who entered stops short.
"No, Leslie," says Sebastian from the floor, "I'm not dead. I have finished building a world, and this is my Sabbath rest."
p.89
As often was the way with Sebastian Knight he used parody as a kind of springboard for leaping into the highest region of serious emotion.
Gee, does this sound like anyone we know? Ya think?

Just finished now myself, and it's definitley time to digest.
Different than anything else I have read; that's for sure!
Gotta sleep on it,

Steffee, Breaca: Any chance for Sebastian Knight?
Meanwhile, Glory is still open for business. :)
Peder
Peder, all: a huge hello to my fellow Nabokovaholics! I have been extremely busy just lately with real life issues (exams, housemate troubles, internet problems) but I have Sebastian Knight waiting for me to start; and I am part-way through Glory still. And I will return to them after my first exam is out of the way (on Wednesday)... I'll look forward to discussing them both with you all.

Great quotes, Pontalba, they definitely make you want to read on. I take it he isn't, in fact, dead? ;)

Great discussion everyone, and a hello to Ms. - I hope you're enjoying the Nabokov fun here. :)

STEFFEE!!! Great to see ya back here at Camp Nabokov. LOL
Now as to the life and or death of certain characters, well now ya never know until the end with our VN do ya? ;)
And sometimes even then I wonder..... :D

LOL Pontalba, you're very right there! I am so tempted to go and start Sebastian Knight right this minute! But since I know that we won't find out until the end, I will resist the urge for just four more sleeps...

Maybe. ;)

Camp Nabokov! I like it. :D

HUGE welcome back Steffee!
So wonderful to hear your voice, and the news that Glory and Sebastian Knight are in your thoughts! Is he dead? Who? What?!
Just read my tagline below,
And we'll be countin' sheep with ya' for four nights
Welcome, welcome back! /big hugs/ :D

VN The Life and Art of Vladimir Nabokov by Andrew Field

I was just mucking about in Field's bio. Brave indeed to write this during VN's life. I have to say that it seems that Field is more interested in resurrecting old scandals than anything else.
No wonder Nabokov was furious with him.
I don't even know if I will finish it or not. Probably.....eventually. Even post comments if I find some. I know I'd posted a bit of it before, but now I'm not sure I want to anymore. :(

No wonder Nabokov was furious with him.(
Strathern's, Nabokov in 90 Minutes /gasp/ gives paragraph summaries of both of Boyd's volumes and Field's 2nd edition, mentioning "skeleton's in the closet" in Field and VN's wrath with him, although also saying Field was "highly complimentary." (p115--116)
That sounds somewhat different from what you've read?
Just asking,
Peder

Maybe it was in 90 Minutes I read of VN's dislike of Field's bio. Basically in the first 7 or 8 pages Field claims that VN's great-grandmother slept with her (who was to be) future son-in-law, one Dmitri Nabokov. That the daughter was basically forced into marrying Dmitri.....
Oh, and that VN's father was the illegitimate son of Czar Alexander II, which was proven by timeline to be impossible. Field admits it but has to add it in for shock sake. grrrrr.
Bloody Soap Opera, and a bad one at that.

Well, I can certainly understand how VN was so upset with Field. I have to say the bits I have read are well written, but the exploitive parts really get my hair up.

I suspect that VN's sense of humor was lost on Field. Vera did warn VN though.

Awww, bless you Peder. :D

I have to admit to having a quick preview at Sebastian Knight last night, in between periods of intense revision, of course. The tagline is catching my eye! It would be quicker to just read the book, than to search this site (and others) for hints, I reckon. But where's the fun in that? ;)

And I got the days wrong, it's only two days now. Eeek, eek. I will be back on Wednesday. :)

Just inbetween huh? Yes, I know how that is, I read inbetween housework etc. More like a little housework inbetween reading.

Wednesday it is then. :)
