I'm heartily addicted to water, in part because being an impoverished student doesn't lend itself to having more delectible drinks in the fridge - and I refuse to buy more than one bottle of pop/soda/lemonade/fizzy drink (refer to appropriate definition based on nationality) a week. They don't have cordial over here which is a right bummer.
But I recall hearing that 8 glasses is a bit of a misnomer. You can get a great deal of your water intake from the foods and other drinks you consume. For example milk and tea would both count as a glass of water replaced. Vegetables which have a high water content also reduce the amount of water you need to drink. But also bear in mind that some substances have a dehydrating effect, particularly alcohol. So if you indulge, be sure to replace your fluids. The same goes for those of us who are physically active - you should be consuming more than the recommended amount of water.
Where do these people get their facts about how many glasses Americans drink? It's got to be from surveys. Most people think they don't drink that much water, but you'd be surprised if you think about what you do consume each day.
