Water Water everywhere, but not a drop is drunk

I'm heartily addicted to water, in part because being an impoverished student doesn't lend itself to having more delectible drinks in the fridge - and I refuse to buy more than one bottle of pop/soda/lemonade/fizzy drink (refer to appropriate definition based on nationality) a week. They don't have cordial over here which is a right bummer.

But I recall hearing that 8 glasses is a bit of a misnomer. You can get a great deal of your water intake from the foods and other drinks you consume. For example milk and tea would both count as a glass of water replaced. Vegetables which have a high water content also reduce the amount of water you need to drink. But also bear in mind that some substances have a dehydrating effect, particularly alcohol. So if you indulge, be sure to replace your fluids. The same goes for those of us who are physically active - you should be consuming more than the recommended amount of water.

Where do these people get their facts about how many glasses Americans drink? It's got to be from surveys. Most people think they don't drink that much water, but you'd be surprised if you think about what you do consume each day.

I drink between 64 and 128 oz of water a day.

I have no idea how much this is! I've been trying to think of what it means, but I'm at a loss. I am only aware of oz as a weight measure, but how does it work as volume? Sorry, I'm imperially challenged...

128 oz. = 3.79 liters if my convertometer thingy is calibrated right...

64 oz = 1.89 liters

I believe there's 64 ounces in a gallon

Thanks Moto! But I still say you Americans are CRAZY !! I'll keep with my base 10, small numbers system, I think.

So we can assume that when you're not currently active in TBF, that you're probably on your way to, using, or on your way back from the little girls room? :D

Um, yea, pretty much. I drank 3 gallons of water yesterday (I was awake for 36 hours straight though). I just couldn't stop. Once your body gets used to being hydrated it really lets you know when it wants more. I've been drinking like this for years. I just drag my nalgene around with me everwhere I go.

It's worth peeing all day though. I have great skin, eat less junkfood than most people and have tons of energy. Plus, I never have to worry about being hungover after a rough night at the bar.

I take it that you hadn't heard the "people in this country aren't dehydrated" theory?

I tend to disagree and my doctor does as well. He and I have discussed this to death because I used to get headaches for no reason and had horribly dry skin. He says that most of his patients come in with varying problems and are often to some extent dehydrated on top of their other problems. He says he drinks water all day and advised me to do the same since I like it anyway. As long as you aren't guzzling gallons of water in a short period of time clean water isn't going to hurt you. I personally think it makes a difference in how I feel and I can visibly see the difference in my skin. It doesn't do a thing for my asthma though and I would never purport that it has anything to do with weight loss.

I did a total, solid food fast yesterday. A full body cleansing. Had not done that in years. Nothing solid to eat since about 10 o'clock Saturday night when I had some chocolate ice-cream(if you consider that solid food). So actually I'm at about 30 hours now with nothing but a cup of coffee Saturday morning, and lot's o' water.

I drank over 144 ounces of water during the day Sunday. I kept track. It's amazing how hunger can be taken care of with one large glass of water. I feel great this morning. The mental part of not eating I think was the hardest. Especially when my wife made spaghetti for dinner. I had to leave the house and go to the store to get milk for the girls. Man, that smell.....

I don't doubt that plenty of American's could use more water. And I don't doubt that people can be suffering the effects of something that water could help. I did however doubt all the claims that original post made. I also know that drinking anywhere from 16 ounces to 64 ounces or more of water a day will certainly not be harmful to you. As long as the water is not too polluted that is....

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger
pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a
U-Washington study.

Until last week, I never ever drank water. But then I started to feel really bad and went to the doctor, and found out that I have a bladder infection caused by not drinking enough water. All I drank was diet coke (or real coke in restaurants...I don't like diet coke with ice and all that for some reason). Anyways, so now I've been drinking water and kool-aid non-stop for 9 days, with 3 cokes when I was eating at restaurants and the movies. And I'll tell you what, in that time I have not ate a single thing after dinner (with the exception of the popcorn at the movies, and even then I didn't stuff myself with dinner). And I feel so much better than I ever did before I was drinkng water. So I definitely think that water will make you feel a lot better, and it does help with the midnight snacks!
