Uncle Tupelo was a (some would say the definitive) alt-country/cowpunk band from Belleville, IL.
New Madrid is a town in Missouri where one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in the US took place. According to eyewitness accounts, it made the Mississippi River run backwards for a time.

Until recently when I saw her on YouTube, I used to think Dusty Springfield was African-American.

Your not alone many others thought the same. She was a great admirer of African American performers and was a major force of introducing their music to the people of Great Britain in the 60's. I believe she even did a duet with Jimi Hendrix live singing "Mocking Bird". She was a very versatile performer.
