What book do you hate but everybody else loves?

Shh! Don't tell my 12 year old son. We found Pride and Prejudice in the library sale cart the other day, and now he's reading it of his own free will because he likes the movie! Do you think this mom was going to tell him he wasn't old enought to "get" it yet???

I adore your new avatar, abc. You must be reading Lolita! :D

Just enjoying the everyday adventure of reading.:p ;)

Yup! The whole pic was great, with the loaded bookshelf behind the lady with the the amazed expression..I tried to "read" those shelves but couldn't:) Actually, I'm between books at the moment. Instead I'm Christmas shopping online..including various books requested by the kids.

I thought of another one - Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. Man, I just couldn't get into this one at all! I loved the premise and the language, but the flow of the book just bored me to tears. I'll give it another whirl next time I'm withint stealing distance of my mother's bookshelf, but I don't hold out much hope, really. I think philosophy just isn't my thing.

i woudl say lord of the rings. i mean, i dont' exactly hate it, i think it's ok, but i can't understand how some people are obsessed about it.

From the replies of the people visiting this forum, I would say that are more people disliked the books or found them to be a struggle than those who enjoyed reading them. Being one of the latter, I was actually surprised to find out how many people didn't enjoy reading LOTR.

I've tried to read LOTR several times, and I've never got past the first section. Dull, and too big.

I really struggled to get through the first one (The Two Towers I think?), and I haven't bothered with the other two. I found it just too descriptive, and too slow. I thought the movies were too long too.

The first (The Fellowship of the Ring ;) ) was a bit of a struggle to get through, yes. I'll admit that it took me three tries to get past the Tom Bombadill (sp) part  But the other two are brilliant, IMO. The Two Towers (the second) is my favourite, but Return of the King was enjoyable also.

I thought the movies were too long too.
The almighty Jackson does no wrong, thank ye very much :D

Oops - yus, that's the first one; not The Two Towers. I remember the Tom Bombadill part as well (the one with a lot of singing??), and I remember skimming a fair bit.

Let's hope not, since he is directing The Lovely Bones. :D

I did not manage to get into Lord of the Rings either. I felt that it was too much like the Hobbit and gave up on it quite early I am ashamed to say. Perhaps I will give it another try. I have not seen the movies. Should I watch them first do you think?

They should be avoided at all costs.

IMHO.

:)
CDA! You blasphemer! The movies are NZ's babies, our precious..s... and Peter Jackson is pure genius. Be sure that you'll be on the receiving end of a Kiwi beatdown if you so much utter something like that again

;) :p

And, yes, I think that you should watch them. :D

I'd LOVE to be able to read the LoTR books, but i also lose interest when you come across the boring bits! I will have to make an extra special effort to read them in the new year. I LOVED the films which is why i don't understand why i find it hard! :)

for a long time i had refused to read HP because of all the hype... not to mention, it was too confusing... i like books that vaguely cross the line between fantasy and reality, or books that are completely fantasy... HP was middle ground, a fantasy that wanted to be reality....

it was out of sheer boredom and nothing else to read that i picked up the Sorcerer's Stone and now i'm a moderate fan
