What does reading a book mean to you?

Do you read for pleasure, thrills, to be scared, find the killer, learn, become well read, to be in with the crowd ie read the top ten books?

I read a lot for thrills or to be scared sometimes to learn sometimes to make me laugh or make me cry. More than anything else due to the vast amount of great literature around you can go to space, ancient Egypt or many of the wars just by reading, that is what really gets me reading

Depends on the mood or current projects i am working. I read sometimes to learn, mostly to be entertained...and for the experience of looking at the world through someone else’s eyes for awhile...

Mostly I read because I love to read. Always have, always will.

Reading fiction it is simply for the pleasure of it. To get lost in a book for a little while, forget things as best as possible. For non-fiction in mose cases I pick up the book to learn or be inspired, or sometimes it's just curiousity.

I like to read for the pleasure of reading, and there are times that I wish to read in order to learn something new or refresh my memory regarding something that is familiar.

I really enjoy reading for the reason of learning. I learn about (the quality of) writing via fiction; and the world/life through non-fiction. Reading/writing is art (expression) and just like a fine painting it is enjoyed and cherished as many time as one wishes.

I love books - the smell of a new books is wonderful, the sound a page being turned is equally as enjoyable, as is owning a full library of noted/worthy books within your grasp.

Books become you; they are a part of you, and reading them is a gateway into another place/time or knowledge. They are portable springboards into the mind of another human being...a transport into elsewhere.

I read for so many reasons but I guess it basically all comes down to adventure's for the faint of heart. It's the opportunity to climb the Andes, catch a murderer, go to a school for wizards (haha, poke:D) or learn how to make the perfect cup of tea, explore the galaxies...all from the comfort of your own living room.

A few years ago I lived the dream of learning how to ride a motorcycle. It was fun but I never could quite get over the nervousness and I never really could settle into it and just ride for fun. I distinctly remember coming down to the bottom of a very steep hill and hoping I was down shifting and decelerating at a proper rate so I didn't wipe out on the upcoming sharp curve. The thought popped into my head "I wish I was at home reading."

For me it is escapism and I learn to write like some of the authors I read. I do read a lot of science and Biology books as well but like nothing better than travelling to different worlds countries and planets that books give me.

I also collect the Sci Fi and fantasy books for book art as well as reading

A book can be read anywhere and one can never get bored. It helps me relax and learn too.

I suppose I read for the same reason I first started reading as a child - to discover other worlds beyond the borders of the world in which I live. I get to have experiences and adventures that I'd never get to have without reading.

Also, I love books - the feel of them, the look of them... the uniqueness of each author and their outlook on life.

I read fiction to immerse myself in another place and time. That is the main reason I prefer historical fiction and fantasy and memoirs. For non fiction, I still mostly read history.

Entertainment, even if I'm learning I read to be entertained. That said, I find learning fun. I read to unwind, feel better, have a good laugh or cry, visit other worlds, lead other lives... or even because there is reading material next to me and I prefer books to people...

I read a book so it entertains me, so it can take me to another world that I don't despise as much as the one I have to live in.

I read for pleasure, which means being attracted to books that capture my imagination in some way or other and that hold my interest, whether through some novelty in their plot, characters, style, or the challenge they pose for understanding. Lately I have been especially interested in seeking out authors and novels that are very different from any I have read before.

I learned to read when I was four by looking over my mother's shoulder as she read my bedtime story, and she knew I was reading when I started correcting her when she missed a passage. Because my parents read before bed, so did I, and so do I, from the time I was a small child to today.

Reading a book is as natural to me as breathing.

I read to learn. Learn about people and places in story form and not textbook form. Without ever going somewhere, I can tell you about the place from reading a book about it. I know that Gilbert Court is one of the most dangerous parts of south Chicago from reading Calumet City by Charlie Newton. I'll never go there, but I have a very good sense of how dangerous it is after reading that book.

I read for pleasure. I truly enjoy it and I enjoy a wide range of books. B&R has helped me to widen the scope a bit to more fiction.

I read for the pleasure of it, and learning about people and places I couldn't possibly visit, whether for reasons of safety, or financial reasons.
To see how people live, and have lived over the centuries is truly an amazing experience. Just to see what makes some people tick is certainly a side benefit.

For the most part, I like my books like I like my sitcoms - light and entertaining. I sometimes read to learn, but I'm sort of a lazy reader, so I like to be entertained while I read. I love settling in to be part of someone else's life or travel via the author's words to another place or time. Reading a good book is like settling back with a good friend, it's relaxing and wonderful.
