Is it time to "elect" or suggest some new mods?

Perhaps one who would enjoy restoring the BOTM?

I say bring back the "I just bought" and "I just read" threads.

Obviously the idea behind removing those didn't work. It just made it so people post less.

I would also open the Mature Discussion forum to everybody. At least until something "touchie" gets discussed there. We had more "edge" in our General Chat discussions here 3 years ago.

Stewart, is there anybody here you would think would make a good addition to the moderator staff?

I would also suggest a special section for self-published authors to post in so that the forum doesn't jump down their throats for posting about a book on a book forum.

It might help keep a few new members here a bit longer. As it stands now a self-published author gets the shit ridiculed out of them the second they self-promote their book. Perhaps, a more inviting atmosphere wouldn't chase them away? Give them a special area to post their book stuff in where they won't get immediately attacked.

I saw a hilarious "ad" at the side of this forum- it was basically for a service that will post messages to your forum to create the illusion that you have more members than you really do...
Not suggesting anyone here wants to use it, but I thought it was funny and pertinent to your "driving traffic" discussion!

Wait. So you're saying Helgi isn't real?

No, it's not. The reason? There's no admin around to effect such changes.

Nope. You are all wicked.

Jumping down their throats is the best part. To be honest, nobody jumps down their throats if they say who they are and what they are hawking. Here's an example. But, even with such honesty, there are still another ninety-nine out there who will use shady tactics to promote their book and for that dishonesty a few lashes of the cat-o'-nine tails is what they need. :D

It's called Writers' Showcase.

If the discussion about new mods is had now, and perhaps a few people are suggested, then maybe when Darren makes his twice-yearly appearance he can make a quick decision.

But then again, maybe most here don't have any problems with how TBF/BAR is being run.

It's just too difficult to tell.

Having a serious discussion about it seems almost impossible doesn't it?

Not many posts today at all.:(

I am putting the blame squarely on you moto. I'm not sure why but it seems appropriate.:p

I do have a question for you moto: You seem hell bent on getting some more mods in here. A forum typically brings in more mods when the activity exceeds what the current mods can realistically be expected to handle. Since that isn't currently the case, why are more mods the answer to low activity?

What I would think additional mods should do is be very active in trying to drive something to happen.

Restart the BOTM and actively recruit participation.
There was once a monthly contest here with a prize.
Start things like photo contests perhaps.
Start things like a poetry contest, or short story contest with a word limit.

Something to engage members into being more active.

I think the mods in a forum like this need to be pro-active in slow periods.

When the joint is on fire they can sit back and just maintain the decor, but when the foundation appears to be crumbling, I think a solid mod team might help repair the damage.

It's obvious the Admin. just isn't going to take an active role in this place. That's been an on-going issue here for years. So that leaves the mod team.

That's just my opinion. You did ask.

To be fair, Darren tried to get more moderators. I know he asked at least two of us to step up, but for various reasons, that didn't work out.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on what the role of a moderator is.

And you're right, I did ask.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on what the role of a moderator is.

Actually, we probably agree 100% on what the role of mods should be. Look at THH and count the mods there.

However, in the case of a forum without an active Admin, I can see a "need" for the mod staff to take over some of those duties.

Perhaps the price that gets paid by having nobody around to "direct and manage the business" is what we see around here today?

Perhaps what's here today is more than enough for some people. Which is fine. But others want more, which is why they don't put in much effort to stay when there's so much more out there on the internets.

(ok, that time you didn't ask. sorry)

Kenny, friend! You do me honor far, far beyond what I or anyone deserves. Truly. But I have always remembered your very cordial welcome of me back to this forum, years ago, way back when, and now you have outdone yourself. I may not deserve it, but I shall always remember it, and your very gracious kindness toward me. This is a very emotional moment here for me. I am truly overcome, although that was hardly my intention in coming.

I say - how about a round of applause for SFG75!:D

Things have certainly livened up here since he posted this thread.

Peder, if you are asked, please un-lose interest and consider being part of the mod squad.

Though I don't have a big, fancy picture like KS, I did use all the happy smilies for you.
