What's your occupation?

I'm a recent college dropout (for the second time - I just can't figure out what I want to do). I've majored in English, History, Psychology and Sociology, and they all left me cold. I'm taking a year out to be an unemployed moocher while my husband works and I sit around reading and writing and studying on my own, then hopefully I'll have a clue as to where it is I'd like to go with this life of mine. I've been pushing myself too hard over the past two years to pick something and force myself to go all the way with it just to get a qualification. Perhaps a year of relaxing and "finding myself" will give me some ideas. I do like the idea of studying Library Sciences or Education, but I'm not going to jump in before thinking this time.

The Gap year is a concept that America should embrace. I think it would have greatly improved my college experience if I had a wee break.

I am a lease administrator for a medium-sized corporation. I enjoy my job -- definitely not boring, but the hours are often longer than I would like. Take the good with the bad, I guess.

Consultant at a firm working with public school districts in California. I do a little bit of everything (lots of computer work) and traveling around the southern half of the state, mostly getting lost, but sometimes talking with school officials.

After reading where some of you are going on vacation, and where some of you live, it leads me to wonder what you all do to earn a living? What pays your bills?

I'm a draftsman/designer in an engineering department. I use Solidworks for 3-D solid modeling, and Autocad for 2-D drafting and drawing. I basically sit at a computer all day and draw/create "pretty" pictures for manufacturing, advertising, marketing, prototyping, and ISO & FDA document control purposes.

i am a domestic goddess trailing nutmeggy fumes of baking pie in my langorous wake( to quote nigella ) i stay at home with my kids. but i've done all sorts of jobs, managed an inn, waitressed, taught english in japan, lingerie salesperson.
my husband is an MCSE and runs the IT department of company here in atlantic canada.

I'm a commissions analyst for an insurance company, a commissions analyst for an insurance company, and a commissions analyst for an insurance company. I say it this way because I do at least 3 peoples' jobs. Alas, I only get paid for one of them...

I work in R and D, design and development for Jaguar Engines.
My responsibilities include making sure our powertrain achieve target performance, fuel economy and NVH.
More laterly I'm on secondment in engine management and emissions, so I have to ensure our engines are clean too.

Very interesting motokid- In terms of CAD, I've been trained in I-DEAS Master series and CATIA Version 5. I also spent 7 years dabbling in analysis tools such as CFD and fluid dynamics virtual tools that simulate and characterise engines.

Unfortunately over here, Engineers are poorly paid and underappreciated. Union driven and/or manual labour professions often get more or are on a par. Mechanics call themselves engineers and don't get alot less than us and London Tube drivers get paid more, thanks to a wonderful system that doesn't reward brainwork, but rewards bureacracy, the lazy and union driven stuff.

Been trying to emigrate for a while to no avail....

I am primarily a "Jack-of-all-Trades" in the world of antiques. Dealers call me up to do everything from making deliveries to covering auctions; from repair work to loading and unloading.

I study economics. And basically the governement pays my bills.

You bloody student! I'm just glad you don't live in England so you're not leeching on my taxes like all the other useless bloody student oxygen thieves.

I want to own a used book store that specialises in thrillers/crime/horro. No romance novels! Like the dude who runs my favourtie bookshop says, he had to create a special section for the interesting books because he couldn't, in clear conscience, put Shakepeare nest to Sidney Sheldon!

What do I do instead? I deal with patients at a public hospital. I am a specialised med tech (neuro).
