When the heck is fall/summer/winter/autumn?

Okay, for the benefit of poor little me, could you guys help me with this? It's terribly frustrating for me whenever I read something like 'Coming out in Fall 2005' or 'To Be Released in Summer.' Arrrrgh! When's that???

I'd like to find out once and for all:
1. When exactly does each season start in US?
2. When exactly does each season start in UK?

Cheers!

ds

summer starts june 21rst, fall starts sept 22, winter starts dec 21, and spring is march 20th. at least as far as my calendar says. for me personally summer starts when it is warm enough to wear open toed shoes and i need a pedi.

does these dates change as the years roll along, or are they set in stone?

Actually a little of both. First day of autumn can be the 22nd or 23rd, spring the 20th or 21st, summer/winter can be the 21st or 22nd. It all depends on which day the solstice or equinox occurs.

Supposedly over an extremely long period of time this can change, so eventually the dates will be different.

I'm... not.... confused.... yet...

Okay then. This solves a lot of questions for me. Thanks you guys! :D

Too bad the weather doesn't care about calendars. ;)

In the UK spring begins on 21st March; summer begins on 21st July; autumn begins on 21st October; and winter begins 21st December.

Ah, cheers Stewart, though I have a question - the period between the start of spring and start of summer is 4 months, while autumn is only 2 months?

No, it's 21st June and 21st September but really, Summer does not start until the end of Wimbledon :D

UK

Spring - 21st March
Summer - 21st June
Autumn - 21st September
Winter - 21st December

:)

(exactly three calendar months in each)

Are those dates as the calendar calls them out , or traditional dates?

The dates we go by in the USA are based on the solstices as mehastings pointed out. Weather be damned in some cases. There's plenty of chances for snow after the calendar says its spring.

I just wonder where the July 21st comes from specifically. That's very late for declaring official summer.

But then that would make the UK season dates the same as US season dates (well, give or take a day).

Is that right?

It's actually 21st June - it is also based upon the summer solstice but we have fixed dates.

Yes :) We just have fixed dates - it is still based around the summer/winter solstice and the spring/autunm equinox.

You know, I looked at that and I thought it was strange. I just can't count my months. :(
:) - Just blame it on being Scottish (you get less sunlight than we do  ).

Most people prefer to go by whole months (ie Summer - June, July, August) and forget that it's actually based on the solstice/equinox.

Oh, damn. Did I just hijack my own thread?

Thanks to everyone who has helped get through my sleepless nights!

"When exactly is the damn movie coming out??? When the heck is Autumn 2005??? Arrghh, I can't sleep!"

Uhm... Ice, are you Vegita? Or some other Dragonball character?

What happened to that nice horsee???

ds
Tut tut - one shouldn't hijack ones own thread :D

In answer to you question - no it's not Vegita (it's not even Dragonball) I'll change it back soon though :)
