When To Start Reading A Series...

Heh. Don't authors have the right to license their book as a product? I seem to recall that the Star Trek Mega Monster has something like that. No one is allowed to publish a book that disagrees with canon. Something along those lines at any rate.
If that's the case then the Phoenix of the Opera series shouldn't have been published. Erik is not a sexy hunk of man like Gerard Butler, but a living corpse.

I would love to read George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, BUT the last book has not been completed (and likely it won't be for a good while) as yet. So I shall wait for (if/when) the series to be finalized before reading the first book. I dislike waiting.

Any other COMPLETED series out there?

Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 series and Rama series.

Larry Niven's Ringworld series.

Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle.

Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series and Ender's Shadow series, plus whatever other series he wrote.

Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I think Tom Clancy has finished with his Jack Ryan novels.

Plus a bunch more I can't think of right now.

The Ryans books are done!? That was one series I began in its infancy. Good news.

I have all the Stephenson's Baroque Cycle books too (I think); hardback volumes as well. I'll get those ready.

Any other?

I'm almost positive that the 5th book is done and they're waiting to release it with the TV show. Recently though, he was in the hospital for a week and things were delayed. I'm sure the 5th book will be seen, but any after that? Really questionable. He'll be spending a lot of time with the TV show, assuming it gets approved for another season, and have even less time for another book.

Go ahead and read it though, man. It's absolutely deserving of all the praise it gets.
